The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, February 6, 2013 B-3 Lady Chargers dominate Boonville By Mike Johansen Senior night seems to bring out the best in the Pike Central Lady Chargers as they want to send off their seniors players with a win and that is just what happened last Tuesday against Boonville. The Lady Chargers downed the Lady Pioneers 51-35 after a slow start in the opening quarter on Jan. 29. "We were very proud of our team and the effort they gave on Senior Night. We had a solid game from our players and they really battled. We had more deflections defensively than we've seen all year and we will need that kind of effort in the Sectional Tournament. We are more than capable. We are very proud of our seniors and are happy to help them get a victory in their last home game at Pike Central," said Head Coach Randy Graham. Seniors Jordan Like, Olivia Leighty, Michal Ashby and manager Janessa Foster were honored before the varsity game that night. Then the Lady Chargers took care of business after the slow start. The very beginning was a good one with Emily Howes swishing through a three pointer with about 18 seconds gone on the first possession. However, the Lady Chargers went silent for almost four minutes until Jordan Like sank a basket with 3:29 remaining. Boonville had scored seven points and still led 7-5 at that point. Boonville also scored the next five points to lead 125. Like made a pair of free throws and Boonville made one charity shot to end the quarter with a 13-7 margin. A pair of free throws stretched the lead to 15-7 before the Lady Chargers started a fast comeback. Ashby sank a jumper, but Boonville countered. Like then made four straight free throws as she was fouled going inside to the basket. After two free throws by Boonville, Like slipped inside for a basket, Lindsey Catt made a free throw and Like a three to tie the game at 1919. Boonville regained the lead briefly. A shot by Ashby tied the game and two free throws by Like ended the first half scoring with the Lady Chargers on top 23-21. Boonville tied the game to start the third period, but the Lady Chargers never trailed again and were never tied again. Like countered the opening basket with a short jump shot for two and Howes canned another three. Boonville cut the difference to two points, but a three by Howes ended that short run. Like added a short shot and Olivia Leighty made a shot off a pass from Ashby for a 35-26 lead. Boonville made the final shot of the third period. Howes took a pass from Alyx Abbott in for two points, Leighty canned a two and Abbott made a long three for a 42-28 edge to start the final period. Boonville could never string together a run as PC used a jumper by Leighty and free throws by Howes and Like to secure the 16 point win. The defense was also a big factor for Pike Central in this game as they kept the two six footers for Boonville away from the basket and kept the Lady Pioneers off balance all night. Jordan Like totaled 24 points and Emily Howes 15. Like had seven rebounds, Ashby six, Howes four, Abbott three and Samantha Halbrader three. Ashby had three assists, Like two, Howes two and Abbott two. Ashby had five steals, Like three and Halbrader two. Howes blocked two shots. It was a good way to close the regular season with a win going into the Sectionals on Friday. Second half rally sinks Chargers JV By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Chargers JV boys basketball team could not hold onto a first half lead and lost to the Vincennes Lincoln JV 41-34 last Saturday night after nearly two weeks off because of weather. The first quarter was a slow one for both teams as they felt out the other and each only scored four points. Two for the Chargers came from Garrett Elliott and two from Dakota Walker. The Chargers offense picked up in the second quarter while the defense kept Lincoln off balance. Lincoln made only two of nine shots and was 4 of 19 from the field the first half. Pike Central was only five of nine with three free throws and led 14-10 at the break. Bailey White had five of the points plus the Chargers had a three by Damon Schnarr and a basket from Jordan Clore. The third quarter was a different story with the Alices JV coming out fast scoring the first nine points to gain the lead 19-14. Elliott made the first basket for the Chargers at the 3:06 mark and Walker added a basket for a 18-21 score. Lincoln hit two threes with Walker sandwiching in four free throws. Another basket by Walker, a free throw by Stefano Dalla Vecchia and a put back basket by Walker had the Chargers down five. A three point play by Dalla Vecchia had the Chargers within two, 35-33 with 1:44 remaining. The Alices went on a 8-1 run to end the game and win 41-34. Dakota Walker scored 13 points for the Chargers, Bailey White 10, Garrett Elliott 2, Damon Schnarr 3, Stefano Dalla Vecchia 4 and Jordan Clore 2. White had eight rebounds and Walker five.
