The Press-Dispatch Slow start dooms Chargers By Mike Johansen Leave out the first quarter of play and the Pike Central Chargers boys basketball team had the lead. However, Vincennes Lincoln had a 21-2 first quarter edge and downed the Chargers 5338 in the first game in two weeks for Pike Central. The Chargers were at home and had not played since Jan. 19 because of two straight Fridays with bad weather and postponements. The South Spencer game schedule for Jan. 25 will be made up Saturday with the JV at 1 p.m. Pike County time and the Varsity at 2:30. The Tell City game set for last Friday will be made up on Feb. 21 in a very busy last week of the regular season. Homecoming will be this Friday night with the ceremonies between the JV and Varsity games with Forest Park. The JV game begins at 6 p.m. then the Homecoming Ceremonies and the Varsity at 7:30 or as soon as the 20 minute warmup period is finished. "I would like to see what would have happened if we had played 32 minutes of basketball," said Pike Central Coach John Mokris. "We have to play 32 minutes. We play 32 minutes and it might have been a little different. I don't know if we could have beaten that team or not, but I sure liked the effort we had the second, third and fourth quarters. We cut the lead to eight points and get the ball and miss a shot. If we had knocked down a shot there, you never know what happens. I think we were a little intimidated tonight. We had some good shots early and did not knock them down. We had five lay-ups and short shots we did not knock down in the first quarter, you have to make those shots. They are a good team with some good players and Coach (Jeff) Hein does a good job with them. I just wish I could see our team play 32 minutes and see what happens." The first quarter was a disaster for the Chargers and proved to be the difference in the game. The Chargers missed the first seven shots they tried from the field and their first two free throw attempts. Vincennes Lincoln, on the other hand, made seven field goals, including one three, and three of Kegan Aldridge puts the stop on a Vincennes Lincoln player during the varsity game last Saturday.
