By Dan Muckelbauer Post Editor MILWAUKEE — The change at the top elected posi- tions in Wisconsin drew sup- port and dismay from special interests falling along party lines. Shortly after his inaugu- ration Monday, Gov. Tony Evers signed an executive order that prohibits discrimi- nation against LGBTQ peo- ple within state agencies, state contractors and state grantees. "Governor Evers heard his constituents loud and clear and took action to pro- tect LGBTQ people from dis- crimination in the work- place," said Megin McDonell, executive director of Fair Wisconsin. Among other interests supporting him was the University of Wisconsin System. "As a former member of the University of Wisconsin System's Board of Regents, Governor Evers knows the vital role UW institutions play as part of the talent pipeline to make the Badger State a great place to learn, work, and live. We look for- ward to working with Governor Evers and the State Legislature in the months and years ahead," the system said in a news release. The progressive-aligned One Wisconsin Now also took inauguration day to congrat- ulate Evers and his top elect- ed officials, all Democrats. Executive Director Scot Ross said in a statement, "It will be the needs of the hard- working people of Wisconsin, our common values and com- mon sense, not personal polit- ical gain, that will now guide the direction of our state. "This change makes it a great day for Wisconsin." Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brad Courtney turned his remarks to the GOP majority Senate and Assembly. "I want to personally con- gratulate Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, along with each and every one of our Republican legislators. Our strong legislative majorities are made up of exceptional men and women who have earned the confidence and respect of voters from all across the state." Wisconsin Right to Life, which protects the unborn, came out strongly against Evers and the change from Republican Gov. Scott Walker that it perceives he repre- sents. "Today is the start of a Tony Evers administration which will work daily to erase the work we have done to protect life for the last eight years," said Heather Weininger, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life.
