Has something gained your attention in such a way that you have made some drastic changes in order to accommodate that matter? Deer hunters do this all the time. I was just reliving the past season with a friend. He was telling me about a place where he hunted that was for bow hunters only. One particular evening, just before dark, he saw what he called the buck of a lifetime, and it was only 60 yards from his stand. And even though he could not get a shot at it, it caused him to almost ignore all the other bucks that came his way; and there were plenty. By the time his few days of hunting were over, he had passed up some really big bucks because none of them were the "one" he had seen just a few days earlier. In the end, the cost was coming home empty-handed all because he had become obsessed with one prize so valuable that every other prize paled in comparison. He is not alone in this obsession. I know of other hunters who have marked one particular buck as their goal and have waited for 2 or 3 years in order to get it. And I know of some who waited just as long only to fi nd out their prize was now their neighbor's trophy. Some may not understand this obsession. Some do. Everyone ought to. In recalling these stories, I am reminded of the Biblical story of the man who found a valuable pearl. The Bible says when he discovered it, he sold everything he owned and bought it. No diversifi cation. No hedging his investment. No waiting until more favorable times. But selling it all – pushing it all in for this one pearl of great price. What was the Lord comparing this most valuable pearl to? The kingdom of heaven. What is the kingdom of heaven? Let's just say it is the totality of God in our lives now and the greatness of heaven in the future. And what the Lord desires is this; that there would come a time in our lives when we fi nally understand the most valuable thing in our life is simply Him. And in fully understanding this, we would willfully, gladly, and excitingly be willing to give it all up in order to experience, without distraction, the worth and surpassing greatness of that relationship. By By Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ ller ller ller ller GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org A black bear found dead in Hyde County has tested positive for rabies — the fi rst known case of a rabies positive black bear in the state, according to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Johnny Dale, of Fairfi eld, contacted the Commission on Dec. 17 after fi nding the yearling male bear dead at his game feeder. Dale reported he fi rst observed the male bear the day before at his game feeder and that it was alive, but very lethargic and unable to move. Because the cause of death was not obvious, Commission personnel conducted an initial necropsy (autopsy performed on animals) and sent the bear to researchers at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at the University of Georgia for further testing. On Dec. 21, SCWDS informed the Commission the bear had rabies, which had resulted in its death. Rabies is a fatal disease, which can affect all mammals, causing infl ammation in the brain with symptoms that can include lethargy, loss of balance, fever, anorexia, and/or eye and nose discharge. Signs progress within days and can include fever; swelling in the head, neck, tongue or eyelids; excessive salivation; diffi culty breathing; diffi culty swallowing, vomiting; paralysis; abnormal behavior, self-mutilation, aggression, and/or no fear of humans. "Rabies in wild black bears is extremely rare; it has been documented only four times in the lower 48 states since 1999," said Colleen Olfenbuttel, the Commission's black bear and furbearer biologist. "You can only get rabies by coming in direct contact with the saliva, tears, or brain/nervous tissue of an infected animal." The Commission offers the same precautions to bear hunters as it does for deer hunters to prevent disease transmission: • Do not handle or eat any animal that is acting abnormal or appears to be sick. • Wear latex or rubber gloves when fi eld dressing; never handle a dead animal with your bare hands. • Minimize the handling of the brain and spinal cord. • Do not allow pets around your fi eld dressing area to prevent contact with saliva, blood and other tissues. • Wash hands, boots and instruments thoroughly after fi eld dressing is completed. I • f a deer or bear is commercially processed, request that animal be processed individually and without meat from other animals. • Use proper cooking temperatures to ensure safe food. Anyone who encounters a black bear exhibiting disease symptoms or comes across a dead black bear should call the Commission's N.C. Wildlife Helpline at 866-318-2401. The call center is open Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On weekends, please call 800-662-7137. The North Carolina Division of Public Health was contacted and provided recommendations to Dale regarding post-exposure treatment. Broadway St., Forest City FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY ©Community First Media Community First Media SPORTS SPORTS High School Basketball R-S Central (10-4) won twice this week on the men's side and could have a couple of more wins had some situational stuff not occurred late in games. Ty Watkins, Jacob Knox and Elijah Carson continue to lead the Hilltoppers with Dee Williams and Trei Gray making headway as role players. Aaron Cuthbertson and Tyrese Miller have also been stepping up in big moments lately, so that should boost the confi dence as they start league play this week. They host Shelby on Friday 1/11. They hit the road for South Point 1/18 and East Gaston 1/22. As for the Central ladies (7-7), they got a big victory against Patton as Nikya Lynch had one of her best games of the season. As for the guys, the ladies also have three leaders in Jada Logan, Jada Wilkins and Maddie Gillie. I believe 6-4 is realistic for both the guys and gals in conference play, but not a guarantee. East Rutherford (10-1) I think we are about to fi nd out how good East really is within the next couple weeks. The potential is there, but the schedule hasn't been good to them so far this season. Although, two legit wins with one coming against North Gaston and the other against Westside are proof of the ability. The Cavs are still 8 or 9 deep with Christian Walker leading the way. Isaiah Lathan has been solid in the post as of late with Owen Chapman contributing from three-point land. Quay Logan is the motor behind the madness and Jayden Waddell may be the most athletic. They host South Point (1/11), visit Chase 1/18 and host a huge match up with Shelby on 1/22. As for the Cavalier ladies (11-1), they maybe winning, but scoring has been a bit of a problem. Well, not Osha Makerson as of late, but they have to get more consistent as league play starts. Brooklyn Henderson with Jazmine and Jayla Twitty are stepping up at times, but with Shelby, R-S and East Gaston as threats, it won't be as easy as it was a year ago for East. In the NFL, just eight teams remain and here is a look at the weekend games. Eagles at Saints Nick Foles is back at again for the Eagles, who have come alive in recent weeks. If there is a blowout this week, it stands in this game. Philly got in and beat one of the better defensive teams in the league last Sunday. I'm sorry, but I am not a believer in the Eagles this year. The Saints have too many weapons and a solid pass rush. Saints 40-20. Cowboys at Rams The Cowboys barely survived at home, but they have a completely different set of problems ahead with the Rams. The Rams have Gurley-man and enough wide receivers to make any defensive coordinator have nightmares. While the Cowboys have got better, they will have to score, but it won't be enough this weekend. Rams 35-20. Chargers at Patriots The AFC could be under upset specials. New England may be the toughest out in the postseason no matter what year it has become. The Pats haven't lost at home all year. I really want to pick San Diego and they could since they play extremely well at home. Patriots 30-20. Colts at Chiefs The Colts are running the football well and playing just as well defensively as anyone left in the playoffs. I know the Chiefs have fallen a number of times in the postseason at home in the past. However, the Chiefs are healthy and boost a huge home fi eld advantage. I could see the upset happening, but I have to go Chiefs 31-28.
