During the course of life, each of us struggle with the purpose for life and living. In the process of fi nding a reason for living, we all will eventually sell our soul to something or to some- one. The danger is found in selling it to the wrong bidder. Popularity, self-ac- complishment, material possessions and pleasure are often the suitors that gain access to our soul. Sadly, when we get to the end of our self-centeredness, we will regretta- bly look back and realize that we have failed to make a lasting impact. We are often like the hoarder who gathers and keeps everything, but eventually all that we have stashed will decay and spoil. We have sold our soul for the temporal with no thought of the eternal. The holy scripture reminds us that we are not to live for self. Even though it goes against human nature, we fi nd our greatest purpose in giving of our- selves. Our search for life's meaning will end when we realize that we were meant to live life with empty pockets. The person who "gets all they can and cans all they get" will someday have a sad awakening. When death comes, our life will be judged according to what we have done with the opportunities afforded to us by God. Jim Elliot, the martyred missionary, reminded us of this great truth when he said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."
