O B I T U A R I E S O B I T U A R I E S Nearly 30 Christmas Eves ago on Dec. 24, 1988, Robert McNair had Rutherford County on his mind. The Houston, Texas philanthropist and his wife Janice McNair, were looking for ways to help young people in Rutherford County go to college. Robert McNair graduated from Cool Springs High School and never forgot his roots here. After graduation from the University of South Carolina, McNair and Janice moved to Houston where he made his fortune as the founder of Cogen Technologies. So it was on Dec, 24, 1988, McNair telephoned his friend and former classmate Charles "Chuck" Flack in Forest City, to talk about fi nding ways to help students in Rutherford County go to college. He knew there would be many without fi nancial backing to attend college. Flack in turn called Robert "Buck" Petty, superintendent of the Rutherford County Schools, and Ron Paris, executive editor of The Daily Courier, and they began formulating a plan for scholarships and subsequently the Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation was begun. The 1990 graduating seniors at East Rutherford High School were the fi rst recipients of the Reach One's Potential for Excellence (ROPE) scholarship that paid eligible students' fi rst year of college at the institution of their choices. Twenty-eight years later, the educational foundation is touching all students in the Rutherford County Schools district encouraging them to become ROPE award recipients. There are hundreds of volunteer mentors working with elementary, middle and high school students preparing them to become ROPE winners and good students. Since 1990 nearly $9 million in scholarships have been awarded to hundreds of students in Rutherford County through the foundation. When McNair passed away on Nov. 23, 2018 in Houston, Texas, of leukemia at age 81, his passing touched thousands of people in Rutherford County. Monica Lee, the executive director of the foundation, had an overwhelming feeling of sadness at his passing. "There are no words," she posted on the organization's Facebook page the day of his death. He was owner of the Houston Texans and many in the National Football League (NFL) publicly thanked him for what he did to bring football back to Houston. What he did for Rutherford County and the country stretches far beyond football. It would be diffi cult to fi nd anyone in the United States as dedicated to providing educational opportunities as the McNairs. The educational foundation was set up to help students 300 years beyond the McNairs being here. "Bob McNair was a true example of a Servant Leader and he will be greatly missed, " said one parent of a scholarship. "His core principles led him to be a servant fi rst. He left every community in which he lived better off than, found it. If we all aspired to be like Bob McNair, imagine what we could accomplish." Rutherford County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Janet Mason said the county lost a tremendous friend in Robert McNair. During the 28 years of the Foundation, the McNairs often came to Rutherford County to personally greet the scholarship recipients and congratulate them at the annual awards banquet. He always spoke to the recipients and encouraged them to fi nd a job they enjoyed. If the fi rst job wasn't what they enjoyed, to fi nd another one, he said. He told students of his own stumbles and said any failures should be regarded as opportunity to try again. He urged students to reach their highest potential of excellence and become the best person they could be. Robert McNair's legacy will live on in the county, state and nation as a servant who cared others. Rutherford County is fortunate to be among those he touched and so thankful for that Christmas Eve vision 30 years ago.
