As the days of our life slip away, we should be reminded of what James said about life's brevity. He compared it to a vapor that appears for a little while and then disappears. It is no secret that as we grow older time begins to fl ee. Due to the vanishing nature of our life, we must seize the moment and make the most of the time we have left. No stone should be left unturned when it comes to our relationships and the opportunities which are set before us. Is there a word you have needed to say to someone, a task that you have planned to fi nish or one of those "I'll get to it" things that you have been putting off? One day your life on this earth will be gone and so will the opportunity to make a difference. Has it ever dawned on you that today may be your last day? Whatever it is; a note, a hug, the gift of forgiveness, a word of encouragement or making sure of your relationship with God, do it TODAY. Here is a poem that reminds us of the shortness of life: When I was child, I laughed and wept, Time crept; When as a youth, I dreamed and talked, Time walked; When I became a full grown man, Time ran; When older still I daily grew; Time fl ew; Soon I shall be traveling on, Time gone. Oftentimes, this search leads us to many questions about mortality and our inability to "save" our loved one from death. This powerlessness many times will be navigated through the context of our religious beliefs. The soul searching ques- tions, "Why did God allow this to happen?" or "Why would a God of love take my loved one?" have been uttered by many in the quiet moments of sadness. The Word of God teaches us that death is a universal result of the fallen state of mankind. A closer look at scripture will reveal to us that God has done everything in His power to de- liver us from the curse of death. The biblical truths of redemption, resurrection and resto- ration are evidence that God has given us the ability to overcome the sting of death. When we place conditions on our faith, then we are attempting to put God in a box of our own expectations. Does God love us any less because our loved one died? The answer to that question can be found on a Roman Cross two thousand years ago. Our loving God allowed His only begotten Son to die a cruel and an unjust death. The purpose of the death of Jesus was to provide hope for mankind. God dealt with death, by winning the victory over it! During our sorrow and pain, we can be assured that God is hurting with us and has promised a Comforter to help us in our time of need (John 14:16). We must be willing to receive this gift of comfort, love, redemption and hope by faith. I believe there is never a time that God is closer to us than at time of death. He has been there all the time!
