There is nothing like the soft glow and warm, cozy feeling that a fire adds to holi- day gatherings. But, before you strike a match, make sure your chimney and fire- place have been prepped for safe use. Local experts from the National Associa- tion of the Remodeling Industry Milwaukee recommend chimneys be inspected and cleaned once a year to avoid dangerous situ- ations. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Com- mission says there are more than 23,000 chimney-related fires annually. Those who've experienced a chimney fire describe it as a loud roaring sound — like a locomotive running through the room — accompanied by fire balls coming out the top of the chimney. The temperature inside the chimney can exceed 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt mortar, crack the chimney flue liner and start the wood framing that surrounds the chimney on fire. "I've been in business nearly 40 years and have seen the extensive damage a chimney fire causes to a home," said Howard Rowell, a master sweep, member of NARI Milwau- kee and owner of Royal Chimney Service in Wauwatosa. "Believe me, you don't want to deal with the aftermath of a fire this holiday season." Creosote and certified chimney sweeps A byproduct of burning fossil and bio- mass fuels like wood, oil, coal and gas is cre- osote. Creosote is contained in smoke and attaches to the inside of the chimney as smoke travels up the chimney and cools. Creosote is very flammable and can ignite if it hasn't been removed during a chimney cleaning. Rowell said that a chimney inspection and cleaning takes about an hour and includes both the indoor and outdoor elements of the chimney — the flue, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper, firebox, chimney liner, bricks, crown, flashing, cap and mortar joints. And, while it may sound a bit like "Mary Poppins," it's important to find a certified chimney sweep who's been credentialed by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. A certified sweep is trained to properly clean a fireplace and chimney and recognize the three different stages of creosote buildup and how to remove the deposits, depending on the level of accumulation. "The sweep will look for cracks, defects or obstructions in the chimney," said Mike Schamens, a certified chimney sweep, mem- ber of NARI Milwaukee and owner of Qual- ity Fireplace & Chimney Service in Wauke- sha. "The inside of the flue is inspected using an internal video camera and home- owners are encouraged to watch as the device travels up the chimney." Natural gas fireplaces For homeowners who like fires but are looking for more convenience, gas-fired fire- place inserts and direct-vent gas fireplaces are popular. "These units do require an annual inspec- tion and cleaning to remove creosote and carbon deposits on the ignition surface, burner and safety-sensing controls," Rowell said. "We also check the chimney flue and vent for nesting material from birds, squir- rels, wasps and bees." In addition, a sweep will test the electron- ic controls for resistance. Three years ago a law went into effect that requires all new gas fireplaces and inserts to have a barrier screen in front of the glass doors to protect children and adults from burns. Older gas fireplaces are exempt but everyone should be careful because the doors get extremely hot, reaching 500 degrees F or higher. "In addition to regular chimney and fire- place maintenance, it's so important that every home has working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor with fresh batteries," Diane Welhouse, exec- utive director of NARI Milwaukee, said. "When you're shopping, add batteries to your list so you can be sure your emergency devices are able to alert you of danger."
