This season is officially over. Now what? This is the perfect time to sit back and reflect on the past growing season while it is still fresh in your mind. Take notes so you can always have it as a reference. I first like to look at the positives for the year. Take note of what plants thrived or which beds looked exceptional. Did you try something new that you found worked well? Maybe things like a new watering system, a different type of mulch in the ornamental beds, hay or straw between the rows of the vegetable garden to suppress weeds, a new vegetable or different variety that you were pleased with, and anything else you can think of that was an improvement. I also like to think of how I can make areas even better for next year. The addi- tion of a color that seemed to be missing in a garden bed, or an area that may need something to help highlight it, or maybe you just didn't grow enough super hot peppers (at least in my world). Don't stop there, either. Talk to your neighbors and friends and ask what worked well for them. Maybe they found something new in the plant world or tried a different technique that made things easier. Use whatever resources you can. Also take note of the disappointments and failures. And remember, failure isn't bad; it happens, that's how we learn. Start with new plantings I like to start with the new plants I grew, be it ornamental or in the vegetable gar- den. Did they perform the way I expected them to? How about the ones in hanging baskets and containers? If not, did I do something wrong with care? Did I over- or under-water or fertil- ize them? Did I use the right fertilizer or technique? Or did I simply over- or under - care for them? Maybe it was just the wrong plant for the wrong spot. Maybe we tried a new tomato and weren't impressed with the flavor. Simply write it all down so mis- takes aren't repeated. Then I like to look at the environment. Maybe that's where the issue lies. Does it need improvement? We had a lot of rain this spring, and throughout the summer, and many plants suffered from too much water. Maybe we need to work on making our soil drain bet- ter with the addition of compost, for example. The weeds were horrendous as well because of the moisture. Maybe we need to look at another approach for slowing them down. Disease and insects were also out in full force; did we keep these in check? If not, what is our plan for next year? Again there is so much to think about, so make note. This time of reflection makes for better gardeners. It is a valuable learning tool. So take the time to reflect, good and bad, and write it down.
