1 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, January 18, 2013 A/Otsego Manor 2x3 Ludo Lefebvre, Nigella Lawson, Brian Malarkey and Anthony Bourdain in "The Taste" Alphabet network rolls out its own food competition TV Media W hen it comes to food, taste really is everything. Oh sure, if it looks good, chances are you'll probably be more inclined to enjoy what you're eating. But most of the time, the official verdict on a dish's palatability rests squarely on those taste receptors in our mouths. Based on that very idea, ABC is adding a brand new reality competition to its mid- season lineup beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22, with the two-hour premiere of "The Taste." The premise of the series is this: an initial group of 16 chefs -- both professional and amateur -- are split up into four teams, each of which are to be mentored by one of four superstar "Taste" mentors. These teams will face both team and individual challenges as they move through the weekly elimination rounds. But what ultimately sends a contestant home each week is a simple blind taste test. That's right -- the focus is put squarely on the food itself, and a single bite can make or break a contestant's run. The judges can't be swayed by sympathetic stories or personalities, because they won't know whose food it is they're sampling. And impressive knife skills might actually mean very little (for once) if they doesn't actually impact the dish's flavors and texture. If that's not daunting enough, ABC has lined up some pretty impressive names to serve as judges and mentors, a move that lends some considerable weight to "The Taste." Nigella Lawson might not be a familiar name to some of the more casual food viewers, but she's been a huge name for years in England. Competitors might wish to avoid displeasing one particular judge. The sharptongued, yet always witty, Anthony Bourdain has never been one to mince words, whether in his best-selling books or his Travel Channel series "No Reservations" and "The Layover." Both Lawson and Bourdain are joined by chef/author Ludo Lefebvre and chef/restaurateur Brian Malarkey. Lefebvre has been making waves for years in Los Angeles with his LudoBites venture. Malarkey has made a name for himself through numerous TV appearances, notably as a finalist on "Top Chef Miami." Do you have a unique recipe to share with us? We may publish it.
