RUTHERFORD REGIONAL'S CANCER RESOURCE CENTER TO OFFER FREE PROSTATE SCREENING Rutherford Regional's Cancer Resource Center will hold a free prostate screening Thursday, Jan. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. There is no cost for the screening, which will be provided by Dr. Glover Little, urologist with Rutherford Urology. According to the Centers for Disease Control, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. In 2008 – the most recent year numbers are available – 28,471 men in the United States died from prostate cancer. However, when detected during the earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is close to 100 percent. "Helping members of our community gain access to cancer screenings is a primary responsibility of Rutherford Regional's Cancer Resource Center," said Jamie Ingraham, Cancer Outreach program manager. "We are fortunate to have physicians in our community who willingly donate their time and expertise." Most physicians recommend an annual prostate screening for men ages 50 and older and at age 45 or older for those with a family history of prostate cancer or who are of African-American descent. Pre-registration is required for the screening, and may be done by calling the Cancer Resource Center at 828-245-4596.
