Jenny Retzlaff of Colgate filed the small claims suit against Tommy Schroeder of Greenfield, a former teacher of hers, in June, seeking $12 in damages as well as interest, court fees and other attendant costs. Retzlaff said Schroeder bought candy from her daughter and would not pay. The girl, Sophia, 8, was selling chocolate and nuts last fall to sup- port her Girl Scouts Troop 10139 out of Sussex. Schroeder prom- ised to pay the amount last fall, then said his bank accounts were hacked and repeatedly apolo- gized. He asked to be given until Dec. 27 to deliver a check, but had- n't done so by January. He at one point asked that the treats be given to patients in a health care facility, saying when he was a patient at a facility in spring "these kinds of treats could make our day." Schroeder blamed health prob- lems and the costs of medications for his inability to pay. The parties settled the matter in court Tuesday for $181.50. That includes the original $12, which Schroeder paid Tuesday, plus $129.50 in court fees and costs, plus half of the $80 Retzlaff paid for a mediation session that Schroeder failed to attend. Schroeder is to pay $30 a month until the account is settled. "I'm just glad it's over," Retzlaff said after court Tuesday. "I am happy with it."
