SPORTS JANUARY 2013 Goodman gets some help Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove Page 7A Fast start propels Lancers Central girls top Spartans Junior leads Central past East By Tony Mooren By Evan Frank Freeman Correspondent Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD Mark Adams resisted an urge to have 6-foot-4 junior Elijah Goodman fill up water bottles at halftime. Goodman and Easts Ryan McBride shared game-high scoring honors during a game last month. But Goodman had help a lot of help. And he helped himself a great deal. Goodmans 20 points and 21 rebounds helped lift his Brookfield Central High School boys basketball team to a 53-34 Greater Metro Conference victory over Brookfield East. Goodmans help came from juniors Riley LaChance with 13 points, Caleb Mortag 10 points and reserve Brad Newman with seven points. The best backup the Spartans could get for McBrides 20 points was eight points from senior Jacob Wiesmueller. Only three East players scored. East senior Brian Smith scored six points, all in the first half, in his second game back from an ankle injury that shelved him at the start of the season. I was going to ask him (Goodman) to fill up our water bottles at halftime but our trainer already had a Gatorade container, said Adams, the Central coach. Goodman helped himself with all his rebounds he entered the game averaging 18 rebounds a game resulting extra possessions and 8for-8 accuracy from the freethrow line. My role on the team is to be the big rebounder in the middle, and every time I see somebody ready to shoot, I go to the basket and try to get the rebound, Goodman said. Adams is revelling in Goodmans rebound sprees, which included one 25rebound outing this season. Hes gone from no one knowing about him to totally being on the map, Adams said. Hes 20 pounds lighter than last season and is a totally different player. Hes such a great player at creating space. The last guys who Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman Brookfield Centrals Riley LaChance dribbles past Brookfield Easts Steven Tongas during a Greater Metro Conference game last month. took up space like that were Joe Thomas and Steve Johnson, and hes so nifty, with a right and left hand and hooks. Hes such a weapon. Thomas is the last Central player to average double-figure rebounds and barely at 10 and that was nearly a decade ago. He had eight rebounds in the first quarter to set a tone, and scored half of his points in each half and Central took a 26-22 halftime lead. But McBride, who was 5 for 7 from the field, had three 3-pointers in the first half and Wiesmueller hit another. Adams said enough of that. We made an adjustment on our 1-3-1 defense in the second half, shading McBride, and that made a significant difference in the game, Adams said. Indeed, McBride was the only player to score for East in the third quarter and in a span of 11 minutes and 55 seconds overall in the sec- ond half. Having only three guys score is never going to help, East coach Matt Malett said. Obviously they did a nice , job with their 1-3-1. It caused us to be on our heels a little bit, and we didnt attack the (defenses) vulnerabilities. We floated some passes and didnt get dribble penetration or move the basketball and use pass fakes well. Their length helps them hide their vulnerabilities well. Until Wiesmueller scored with 4:06 remaining in the game, only McBride scored in the second half. We never make excuses but when we get healthy, well have more options, Malett said. We have enough talent that could have been the case tonight, but their 1-3-1 caused us a lot of problems. Central also had a season-low six turnovers, while East had five alone in a second-half 2-for-15 shooting stretch when the Lancers extended their lead to 45-28. Townsend in the second half. Part of it, their defense got a little better, Wandrey said. They didnt give us as many easy shots as they did at the beginning. The other part was we got some good looks that we didnt necessarily make. Wandrey also believed his team is selfless, but could work on taking more shots. We share the ball, Wandrey said. Its a good problem to have. People are really concentrating on guarding (junior guard) Lydia (Rohde). Shes got to find open people and youve got to be ready to step up and knock it in. Rohde, Centrals leading scorer this season was held to three points by East, which opened the door for others to step up. Emma Brauer has been great, Wandrey said. Sarah Fotsch played a good game. (Junior forward) Jasmine Lewis has been awesome on the boards. Lydia, I think she got in a funk a little bit. She got some good looks early that just didnt fall. Upscale Womens Consignment ORDER A LIFTMASTER 1/2 HP GARAGE DOOR OPENER & GET 2 REMOTES & KEYPAD. East ended the game on a positive note by outscoring Central 9-8. (Central) was good defensively, East coach Michael Goodman said. We were looking for the screen and roll, which we put in last week. Right away we could have got a couple and kind of had our head down and didnt quite get there. Goodman thought his team adjusted well at halftime to Centrals defense. The Spartans field a younger team and start two freshmen (Miller and guard Angela Pichler). You can have summer league games or AAU games or whatever it is where you think you see, but the intensity of the rivalry game at varsity is just different, Goodman said. Ive talked to every single one of them. I said, The jump to varsity, was it bigger or smaller than you thought? And they all thought it was bigger. Wandrey believed East cracked down defensively Such great prices... Brookfield Central High Schools girls basketball team got off to a quick 14-3 first-quarter lead and eventually beat crosstown rival Brookfield East 38-18 last month. Weve really been focusing on our intensity and our energy at the beginning of the game and the beginning of the third quarter, Central coach Dan Wandrey said. Our girls have done a real good job with that. That was good to see at the beginning. Central sophomore guard Emma Brauer played a crucial role scoring eight of her 10 points in the first half. The Lancers shut out East in the second quarter with swarming defense and limited freshman forward Mariah Miller to six points in the game. Wandrey focused on the player responsible for defending Miller. Sarah Fotsch is a really good defender, Wandrey said. Shes tough, shes athletic, she is really good at positioning. Obviously thats a senior-freshman thing. Mariahs been really good, but I thought, not that we had an advantage by any means, but Sarahs played in all kinds of games like this. She understands positioning and kind of has some good instincts. She works really hard. Fotsch was also important offensively and put up eight points. The third quarter wasnt any kinder to East as senior guard Mary DeChant helped fuel Centrals onslaught with backto-back 3-pointers. We got kind of a slow start in the third quarter and then I was open for two shots in a row so I just took them, DeChant said. I got lucky.
