JANUARY 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove Page 5A Azana makes new beginning Brookfield firm adds jobs BROOKFIELD Information technology firm Superior Support Resources announced the addition of five employees to its staff of 38 IT professionals recently. They are: Girija Jayabal and Dan Schroeder, Web application developers, Stephen Moffitt, network engineer, Nathan Wood, client partnership manager and Katrina Kadrich, data entry clerk. Our company has a unique approach to IT services, says President & CEO Sarit Singhal. We look for people who are a good fit with our vision. Technology can change overnight so our employees need to be well-versed in the latest trends and how our IT programs can best help our clients succeed. Since January of this year, SSR has added more than a dozen employees in various IT specialties, including technical support and engineering. In addition, the firm launched its business services line to provide customers with business systems support through integration and automation of internal and external IT offerings. Salon reopens with permanent memorial to shooting victims By Mary Reardon Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD Groups of three three yellow roses, three pieces of coral, three wreaths, three candles have a meaningful and permanent place at the redesigned Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield. Each set of three represents the women, Cary Robuck, Zina Daniel Haughton and Maelyn Lind, who were killed at the spa Oct. 21 by Haughtons husband, Radcliffe Haughton, who committed suicide at the spa. Four women were wounded. The spa reopened Dec. 1. Zina Daniel Haughtons family has asked that she be identified by her maiden name of Daniel. The redesign was a very personal and emotional endeavor for Viki Murray , interior designer and sister of owner Tami Gemmell. Murray was getting her hair done by Maelyn Lind when the shooting occurred. Its definitely cathartic, its very healing, says Murray of the design. To me, it would have just felt wrong for someone else to come in here and do it. And I feel like Ive honored the three women who died here that day by making this a new place for our Azana families, she said. Murrays color choices of warm blues and greens were deliberate in the wake of the tragedy Blue evokes emo. tions and feelings, feelings of calmness, feelings of serenity and feelings of tranquility . It can also lower our body temperature and our heart rate and promote a physical healing, she said. Green is stress-relieving; thats why people who are getting ready to go on camera sit in a green room, she said. The redesign is key for the 65 employees who continue to work at Azana. Four quit after the shooting. Its important for the employees that it look completely different so the girls could feel good about coming back in here, said Murray . Part of the back wall of the first floor is covered in mirrors, so employees at pedicure stations can see the front door behind them. Its a security thing, Murray said. The area of Zina Daniel Haughtons former station by the spas front entrance is now a permanent memorial, with two small chairs, an abstract green-blue painting, three yellow flowers and a candle. A plaque outside near the entrance of the spa reads, In Memory of Zina, Cary & Maelyn, October 21, 2012, we will miss you. Gemmell made the changes for psychological reasons, as a new beginning, she says, but also because the spa was badly damaged by the sprinkler system, which ran for more than an hour after the incident, leaving as much as a half foot of standing water. It makes one think: How does a workplace go on after such a tragedy? In this case, its by taking stock of ones place in the community . I never once considered closing the spa. I own the building and Ive employed 65 women for 13 years and have a responsibility to them. Were a big part of Brookfield. And if I close, he wins, she says of Radcliffe Haughton. Gemmell says clients are returning. Weve had an outpouring of support from our clientele, she said. Three named among top business coaches in world Tami Gemmell, owner of Azana Spa & Salon, talks to media about the new renovations. A memorial stone was placed outside Azana Salon & Spa for Zina Daniel Haughton, Maelyn Lind and Cary Robuck, the victims of the Oct. 21 shooting. Life Just Got a Little Easier Practicing general dentistry in Wauwatosa for 17 years.
