Unfortunately, it is a fact of our everyday world. While we are warned about an impending hurricane, tornado, or flood, some disasters occur unexpectedly. These include an earthquake or a military attack, such as what our coun- try experienced on 9/11. Bad as all of these situations are, it is imperative to be prepared for them, whether or not we receive advance warning. The Neal Senior Center will be conducting a semi- nar on "Disaster Planning", which will provide informa- tion about how to become well prepared for natural or unexpected disasters. It will be held on Thursday, August 23, beginning at 9:15am. Debra Kuykendall, Ministry Services Director for the North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministry, will preside over the seminar. It will be about an hour in length and include a PowerPoint presentation. Through this presentation, becoming aware of what to do will be easier as you learn the necessary steps of preparation. Pre-registration is required. To pre-register for this semi- nar, or to obtain additional information, please call the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488. Some go "all out" with deco- rations, food and presents. Some prefer something sim- pler, such as just a cake and ice cream and nothing more. Some even like being taken out to a restaurant for a nice meal. Some people, unfor- tunately, have no celebra- tion at all, often due to the person not having family or friends with which to share their day. The Neal Senior Center would like to take these factors into account and celebrate YOUR birth- day! Though it's now July, we will celebrate your birthday regardless of what month it is! This is a celebration for EVERYONE, since every- one has a birthday! Our "Ice Cream and Cake Birthday Party" will be held on Thursday, August 16, beginning at 1:30PM. This event takes into account all of the mentioned ways people celebrate birthdays: there will be decorations and food…it will be simple, with ice cream and cake…..the event will be held at the Neal Senior Center cafeteria… and even if nobody offers to celebrate your special day, we will do it with you! So that the center will know how many to prepare for, it is imperative that you pre-register for the event. To pre-register, please call the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488. Please give your name and phone num- ber to the receptionist and you will be all set to cel- ebrate! Do you enjoy good food and great fellowship? Would you like to meet some new friends? If so, you are invited to join the Neal Senior Center Dine Around Club for seniors age 50 and better. During the months of January-September, the Dine Around Club meets at an area restaurant on the 4th Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. Join us on Thursday, August 23rd as we dine at "Creekside Clock", located at 1025 Kiser St. in Shelby. Again, we will meet at 5:00 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please call the Neal Senior Center's Front Desk at 704-482-3488 to reserve seat- ing by or before Tuesday, August 21st.
