The jobless rate for the Evansville MSA was 3.5 percent in June, which was an increase of four-tenths of a percentage point from 3.1 percent in May. In June 2017, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 3.5 percent. According to data pro- vided by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, the Evansville MSA – which includes Gib- son, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties – had a total of 164,200 jobs in June, an increase of 4,800 jobs from June 2017. From May to June, the Evansville MSA experi- enced increases in the min- ing, logging and construc- tion (+300), manufactur- ing (+300), professional and business services (+200), education and health ser- vices (+200), hospitals (+200) and leisure and hospitality (+200) sectors. The gains were partially offset by losses in the state government (-700) and lo- cal government (-400) and sectors. Indiana's seasonally-ad- justed unemployment rate rose from 3.2 percent in May to 3.3 percent in June, remaining lower than the national jobless rate of 4.0 percent. With the excep- tion of one month when it was equal – in October 2014 – Indiana's unemploy- ment rate has been below the U.S. rate for more than four years. The monthly unemploy- ment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the pri- or four weeks as a percent- age of the labor force. Indiana's labor force had a net increase of 14,948 over the previous month, which was the result of an increase of 3,795 unem- ployed residents and an increase of 11,163 in em- ployed residents. Indiana's total labor force – which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seek- ing employment – stands at 3.36 million, and the state's 64.6 percent labor force participation rate re- mains above the national rate of 62.9 percent. In addition, Indiana's ini- tial unemployment insur- ance claims continue to be at historical lows. Statewide, private sector employment has grown by more than 16,600 jobs over the year, and has decreased by 2,500 jobs over the pre- vious month, primarily due to losses in the private ed- ucational and health ser- vices (-2,700) and other (- 2,000), which includes min- ing and logging, IT and other services, sectors. Losses were partially off- set by gains in the manu- facturing (+1,600) and the financial activities (+900) sectors. Total private employ- ment stands at 2,699,000 and is 10,100 above the De- cember 2017 peak. JOBS Continued from page 6
