Thursday, December 27-January 2, 2013 www.rutherfordweekly.com VOLUNTEERS TURNED EMPLOYEES SHARE HOW PROGRAM HELPED THEM WITH CAREER AT RUTHERFORD REGIONAL The more prepared you are the more easily you can nd a job. And for those who may want to pursue a career in health care, Rutherford Regionals Teen Volunteer Program offers students in 8th grade and higher an opportunity to work alongside health care professionals. The Teen Volunteer Program is an opportunity for teens to gain knowledge of the medical environment and hopefully create career interests. It also gives students the community service hours they need for scholarships and college applications, said Ginger Dancy, Rutherford Regionals director of Volunteer Services and Community Relations. Several former teen volunteers have returned to full-time employment with Rutherford Regional. Carla Amos, a ward clerk on Rutherford Regional Medical Centers surgical oor, was a teen volunteer in the summer of 2008. The experience inuenced her decision to become a certied nursing assistant. Im really enjoying being back as an employee, Amos said. Matt Jonas, who works in Materials Management, was a volunteer from 1998 to 2001. The Teen Volunteer Program was a footstep on the doorway of a career path at Rutherford Regional for me, Jonas said. Kelly Welch volunteered from 2009 to 2012. While she doesnt want to pursue a clinical career, her time at Rutherford Regional made Kelly interested in food management. Shes now employed in the Break Away Caf. I volunteered in the cafeteria for the dietary department for approximately two years, Kelly 828-248-1408 Rutherford Weekly - Page 11 Personal Classied Ads ONE WEEK 7 $ 50 y Onl said. As a result, I was able to get a job working when it became available because everyone knew me. The Teen Volunteer Program didnt just lead to a job for Jessica Roper it also helped her to narrow down which area of health care she wanted to pursue a career in. A volunteer in The Birth Place, Roper said she realized that nursing wasnt what she wanted to do. That is when my decision to become a pharmacist was nal, Roper, who works in the pharmacy, said. I could be a vital part of the health care team as a pharmacist. Rebekah Patton decided to pursue becoming a registered nurse after her time as a teen volunteer. She knew she wanted to go into the medical eld, but like Roper, wasnt sure which path she wanted to take. Applications for the Teen Volunteer Program are available through all area middle, high, charter and private schools beginning in March. All applicants are required to get a recommendation from their principal or teacher as to their grades, attendance and behavior record and whether they would recommend the student or not. Teens are also required to submit a letter of reference from someone other than a relative and to write a paragraph as to why they want to be a teen volunteer. New teen volunteers are required to have a TB screening, to submit their immunization record and to attend a two-hour orientation where they are given a tour of the hospital and are taken to their assigned department.
