He was 61. Antle was president and CEO of Tanimura & Antle, the largest lettuce and vegetable producer in the Salinas Valley. T&A was launched by Antle, his father and brother, along with the Tanimura family, in 1982. "It's a devastating loss for the ag industry, not just here, but nation- ally," said Jim Bogart, president Grower-Shipper Association of Central California. "... he's made long-lasting and significant con- tributions to the ag industry here on the Central Coast." Bogart said Antle had even more impact in the community with his involvement in "so many incred- ible, generous, philanthropic and charitable endeavors." Many of his contemporaries described Antle as a visionary and someone not afraid to think outside the box. In 2016, Tanimura & Antle launched "the first of its kind" Agricultural Employee Housing – Spreckels Crossing – to provide clean, safe and affordable housing for seasonal employees and to address the labor shortage in Monterey County. In 2017, T&A launched its Employee Stock Ownership Plan giving employees an opportunity to become part owners of the company. "Thinking of Rick personally, he was larger than life, intelligent, and understood his business from top to bottom. He was a terrific thinker and a person of action," said Dennis Donohue, former Salinas mayor and ag industry stalwart. "With all that applies to Rick, it certainly speaks to the big shoes needing to be filled." Donohue said Antle was a leader who was not afraid to try new things, invest in them and see if they worked. He did it with patience and took the long-view on many things such as artisan lettuces. "He always struck me as a no-nonsense to problem-solving, cut-to-the-chase kind of guy. But always fact based and knowl- edgeable of industry issues," said Lorri Koster, former chairwoman and CEO of Mann Packing. Koster said there is comfort in knowing that his son Brian is also well-versed in industry issues and has stepped into a leadership role. "I think that would be one of (Antle's) proudest accomplish- ments." Antle was a tremendous mentor and champion to model a er and continue the good fight in the ag industry, said Koster. "Last year, I participated in the in guiding its course the past three decades. Antle led the company into many different innovative areas such as its artisan lettuce operation in Tennessee and a growing organic produce presence. Tanimura and Antle farms over 30,000 acres of land and ships a full line of premium fresh produce throughout North America, Europe and Asia. It employs more than 2,200 full-time workers and houses 800 employees at its Spreckels Crossing housing site. "Rick Antle was a community icon in his industry. A great leader, determined and dedicated to whatever he embarked upon. He was very generous to his com- munity. This is a great loss," said Don Chapin, president of the Don Chapin Company. Antle is survived by his wife, Tonya, and his two sons, Brian and Jeff, both of whom are involved in the company. He is also survived by his mother Sue, brother Mike, and sisters Kathy and Karen. Services will be held 2 p.m. on April 27 at Tanimura & Antle in Spreckels. ty-mindedness, generosity, and leadership has set a high bar in the ag industry. Antle grew up in the family busi- ness as the grandson of vegetable pioneer Bud Antle and son of the equally imposing Bob Antle, according to a statement from the Monterey County Farm Bureau. He began his career at Bud Antle, Inc. in the early 1970s. When Tanimura & Antle was launched in 1982, it would continue a tradition started by the Antles of selling the crops that the Tanimuras grew dating back to 1949. The Tanimura family built a large and thriving farming business before all was lost during WWII and family members were sent away to an internment camp in Arizona. A er the war, the Tani- muras rebuilt the family business ev entually gr ow ing ex clusiv ely fo r grower-shipper Bud Antle in the late 1940s. Tanimura and Antle was formed by members of both families, transforming the enterprise into a powerful and innovative company with Rick Antle ta king a l ead ro le Grower-Shipper Association's AgKnowledge program. Rick was one of the presenters on our last day (I suppose they saved the best for last). Always generous, he donated the use of T&A's facili- ties. What's even more important is that he made it a point to be present for our graduation and to socialize with the students a erward. They say you remember how people made you feel and I'm sure Rick made a lot of people fe el blessed and fo rtunat e t o h av e known him," said Paul Farmer, Salinas Valley Chamber of Com- merce CEO. "I landed in Salinas thanks to Rick," said Steve McShane, Sali- nas council member and business owner. McShane said as a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he came to an event hosted by T&A that included farm tours and a dinner at the company's headquarters. "(Antle) gave me his personal info and invited me to come back for the rodeo," said McShane. "I eventually moved to Salinas, got involved and the rest is history."
