FOR THE Wedding, Anniversary or Engagement Announcement Intent to lay off 236 workers made official Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — It's been a while com- ing, but GE Distributed Power, Inc. gave official notice to the state on June 29 that it will begin to lay off 236 employees in its Waukesha facility at the end of August. GE announced in September 2015 that it was going to stop manufacturing gas engines in Waukesha in favor of a new $265 million facility to be built in Welland, Ontario, Canada. The reason for the move, the company said, was because at the time, Congress had allowed the Export-Import Bank's authorization to lapse. Months later, in December 2015, Congress reauthorized the Ex-Im Bank. But the company cited Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby's reluc- tance to approve then-President Barack Obama's nomination of a third member for the five-person board, it remained unable to approve transactions of over $10 million, because it needs a quorum of three members to do so. A GE spokesman said the company would love to continue investing in the United States and Waukesha, but with- out a fully operational Ex-Im Bank, things remain uncertain. And the commitment established between GE and Canada was also used as a reason why the decision to move jobs north was not changed. In its notice to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development on June 29, GE Distributed Power said layoffs of the 236 workers at 1101 W. St. Paul Ave., Waukesha, were expected to begin around Aug. 31. The layoffs are expected to be com- pleted by April 30. The DWD and its regional workforce partner, the Waukesha-Ozaukee- Washington Workforce Development Board, will provide rapid response serv- ices to affected workers.
