Page 4A • FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY November 2016 Q.: My wife has decided that after 40 years she is tired of cooking on our 1920s stove. It has been used in our cabin since 1960 and is fully functional. We are looking for any infor mation including value. — W.C., Wauwatosa A.: Nothing is more cen- tral to a home then the kitchen stove. Your cast- iron domestic Simplex Uni- versal has four bur ners, appears to be nickel-plated and the white door-fronts and back splash are wash- able porcelain. This exam- ple has a pair of upper warming ovens and a flat top for additional shelving. The fuel source can be wood, coal or gas. However, it consumes large amounts of fuel in proportion to its heat output. Plus, in hot summer months and through canning season — boy, was it hot in the kitchen! Spare parts to repair these stoves can be prob- lematic. Often rust patches in liners and ash pans go unnoticed and pose a fire hazard. Most of these beauties are found in poor condition, thus sold very inexpensively or end up in the scrap yard. Ten years ago, your cast- iron stove would have fetched a higher value. Six- burner examples sell faster and popularity of using these old stoves for decora- tive purposes has declined. (There is a similar stove for sale at a local restaurant for $400 and although it has good market exposure, it has sat there, unsold, over a year.) Five hundred to six hundred dollars is the current market value. A true story: In Tennessee during the early 20th century, a wood frame manufacturing plant burned to the ground. The entire third floor was used as a display room showcas- ing the finest and newest models of cast iron stoves. As the fire burned and the floor gave way, all the stoves plummeted into the basement. Once the smoke and embers cleared, guess what had happened to those stoves: nothing! After they were given a good cleaning, not even scratch- es were found. (I wonder if that was the first "fire sale.") * * * Q.: This smoking Indian comes in two parts. Can you tell me anything about it? When incense is burned on the blanket, the smoke will rise through his mouth. — B.D., Brookfield A.: This Native Ameri- can chief figurine has been attributed to the Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Fir m, Bridgeport, Conn., circa 1909-1940s. Middle- class Americans at the time were introduced to Indian culture with thousands of tourists experiencing a new mode of travel out West — via railroad express. Fascina- tion and interest with any- thing Indian soared. In 1935 a particular Fed- eral Emergency Relief Administration project propelled further national interest in items represent- ing the American West. It was then that a large smoke signal FERA sculp- ture was placed in Pioneers Park, Lincoln, Neb.. Savvy marketers sprang on any new novelty merchandise that had an American Indi- an theme. Interestingly, when a small bit of incense was placed on his blanket and lit, it produced smoke that exited his mouth and the pipe bowl. The detail on the feathered headdress is well-defined and the cast alloy still holds original patina. Value is $125. NOTE: Authentic peace pipes were nor mally carved from clay-hard- stone or animal antlers.
