The lunch- es are packed and the kids are waiting at the bus stop. A flash of yellow appears over the hill as moms wait with bated breath. After a long summer, the school bus is the threshold between summer and freedom for parents everywhere. For a group of Pewaukee moms, back to school is their favorite holiday of the year, com- plete with a mom party. In the movie "Bad Moms," Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn portray overstressed and frustrated moms who snap from trying to be perfect. In the movie the characters go on a wild partying spree. The local moms don't party that hard, but they enjoy celebrating the oppor- tunity to relax and re-establish routines after the busy summer months. For Chris Krasovich, this is her second year attending a mom party since moving to Pewaukee. She joins up with moms Becky Bierce and Julia Westphal. "It has been a long summer; it is the time for moms to reset and build up their com- munity of support again," she said. Krasovich explains the party is to cele- brate surviving the summer. She reassures everyone that parents love their children and don't feel desperate to send them back. During the final days of summer, however, everyone is eager to get back into a routine. By August the camping is done, the weather is hot and bedtimes are off kilter. "During the summer the kids went to a million sleepovers. The name is a mis- nomer. It should be called a stay-up-later- over," Krasovich said. The school glue always sticks twice As the red-circled date on the calendar nears so does back-to-school shopping. The process hurts like a fresh sunburn. As many parents can relate, back-to- school supply lists can be agonizing. Krasovich mentioned an intense discus- sion on social media over white versus purple glue sticks. Many moms couldn't find white glue sticks, only purple ones. Some questioned if the purple glue stick works the same after it dries. Krasovich pointed out it all comes down to striving to be a perfect parent. For Westphal, perfection simply doesn't exist. "Bad Moms" struck some chords with her, especially in terms of trying to do everything right. In the movie, Kunis's character is worrying about ensuring snacks are gluten-free or being aware of allergies. The character finally throws down a box of doughnut holes and said if someone has an allergy, don't eat it. "I've been up burning the midnight oil trying to make Pinterest cupcakes and fail- ing. I was trying to live up to someone else's standards," Westphal said. Kunis's character is a very young mom and the Parent Teacher Association picks at her insecurities. Westphal said every parent faces a unique set of pressures no matter whether they are a single mom, stay-at-home mom or a working mom. She faces the stress of working full time and trying not to miss out on her children's experiences in life. The Pewaukee moms believe in letting their hair down and enjoying social time to burn off stress. "You don't have to go to the extreme like trashing a grocery store like in the movie, but we all need a break," said Krasovich. Getting ready to get together On Sept. 6, close to 40 Pewaukee moms were to meet up for fun, food, and freedom. "We will have 'momosas.' It is too early to drink wine, so we have to keep it respectable," said Krasovich. There will be a huge spread of goodies and the daytime celebration involves singing karaoke for hours. The ladies do parodies of famous songs such as Bey- once's "Single Ladies" or Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." They change the words to "Science teachers" and "Baby got class." The day is an opportunity for moms to get to know each other and build a support network. Westphal explained through sports, dance classes and bake sales it is hard to find time to socialize. In "Bad Moms" the characters find a lov- ing group of friends who build each other up when they get knocked down. Westphal said the party allows moms to find peers who will be there for them and remind them what is important. "We are all bad moms to some degree. This is a chance to find a good group of women who accept you with all your flaws," Westphal said.
