By Karen Pilarski Freeman Staff DELAFIELD — Waukesha County remembered the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 ter- rorist attacks through songs, prayers and words on the Field of Flags at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy. SJNMA members played the bagpipes and taps as a sea of flags danced in the wind. Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson was the keynote speaker during the one-hour ceremony. "A day like today is sober- ing as we remember, reflect and commit," Johnson said. He remembered hearing voicemail messages of a few passengers on Flight 93 in a new visitors center in Penn- sylvania. The passengers were more concerned about their family members than what was happening on the plane. Johnson recalled how the world changed in an instant on 9/11. He remembered a time when he could go to the airport and hop on a plane, without going through secu- rity screening. As a boy, Johnson said, he thought about exotic places in the Middle East he wanted to travel to. Now, he noted, travelers have to check out the state terror watch list to ensure a trip to such a place is safe. His call to action was to remember what the world was like before 9/11. Johnson said he is hopeful freedom expands rather than con- tracts. "We will defeat this enemy that has changed us so much and deprived us of our free- dom," he said. History lessons Students from Arrowhead High School Broadway Com- pany sang "The Star-Span- gled Banner." Many looked too young to remember the dark day in our country's history. Waukesha County Execu- tive Paul Farrow remarked that most people know where they were on 9/11 and it is still vivid in their memories. Farrow said there is a gener- ation which included many of the SJNMA cadets who had not yet been born on that date. Farrow pointed out these types of ceremonies relay the tragedy and hero- ism on 9/11 to the younger generation. He recalled driving to Stevens Point on 9/11 and hearing the news on the radio. "I remember a truck ahead of me with a bumper sticker that said nothing can happen today that you and the Lord can't handle," Farrow said. Continued respect for everyone In Farrow's opinion, that is the motto for first respon- ders and people who serve and what they deal with each day. "These individuals don't run away from danger, they run towards it every day," he said. Summit Police Chief Michael Hartert discussed coming to grips with the loss of life on 9/11, while new incidents bombard first responders in its wake. He used the example of radical individuals killing police officers. "We continue to treat everyone, even those who show disdain for us, with dig- nity and care," Hartert said. Hartert remarked how sup- portive citizens and business partners have been to first responders. He urged the community to stick together and keep striving to make the area safer. He quoted Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr.: We are partners now, can I count on you?"
