Oconomowoc is a very unique community because of the people who live here. If you look around, you will see concrete examples of how the com- munity has come together to make the quality of life here even bet- ter. We have c o m m u n i t y built, all-inclu- sive playground Imagina- tion Station, recently we cel- ebrated the dedication of Veterans Memorial Park and there are several other projects in the works in our great city that will happen because of the strong com- munity partnerships you will find in Oconomowoc. Q.) What is the business community like? A.) We have a very strong business community that continues to attract more entrepreneurs and investors because of our attractive downtown and space for more commerce throughout the city. Our downtown has come incredibly far in the past decade. This is in part because of strong down- town business owners who have worked incredibly hard to create popular, thriving businesses. We are also very lucky to have a local bank that is truly invested in our community and has partnered with the city to help create more growth through our down- town loan pool. Our director of economic development works hard to find opportu- nities to help our businesses like offering funds for busi- nesses to improve their storefronts through the city's façade program. Q.) W hat is it like to raise a family in Oconomowoc? A.) Oconomowoc is grow- ing in popularity for young families because raising a family here is so great. We have incredible schools that continue to grow in acclaim. The amenities for families in this community are sec- ond-to-none. You can find many free, family friendly activities on a given day in our parks and community gathering places like our public library. There is a reason that our schools need more space and the housing market is thriving in Oconomowoc — it is truly a place to raise your family. Oconomowoc is one of the safest cities in the state, a great credit to both the qual- ity of the residents as well as the outstanding work of our police and fire departments. Q.) What are some upcom- ing events in Oconomowoc? A.) Our summer event cal- endar is in full swing. Not a week goes by without some- thing fun and entertaining — and mostly free — to do. Right now we have Ocono- mowoc American Legion Band concerts every Wednesday through August. You can catch a free Friday concert at the beach. And we are fast approaching Oconomowoc's Festival Week. We cap it off with the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts, but the entire week leading up to Aug. 20-21 is chock-full of fun stuff to do. You simply need to become our friend on Facebook, or sign up for calendar alerts through our city website and we will keep your calen- dar full of fun stuff to do. Things don't slow down after summer either, we have Fall Festival coming up in September and don't for- get to mark your calendars for Oconomowoc's German Christmas Market in November. Q.) How is Oconomowoc changing or growing? A.) Oconomowoc has seen an increase in development recently; the prior 10-year trend saw an average 2 per- cent per year. Between 2014 and 2015 estimates there has only been a 1 percent increase the past year. As more housing opportunities become available and the economy improves, Ocono- mowoc will be positioned to welcome new residents. The city needs to grow to prosper and continue to provide the services and amenities through expansion of the tax base. Successful communities maintain the ability to grow, as well as embrace welcoming more people, including those who are new to the community. Our community will contin- ue to see an increase in pop- ulation, given Oconomowoc is a family friendly place with a great quality of life, successful events, and quali- ty schools. A united community Nold City continues to grow, partner for improvements By Katie Miller Executive director Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce OCONOMOWOC — What makes Oconomowoc a great place to work, live, play and own a business? The answer is charm, per- sonality, access and commu- nity. Oconomowoc's charm and personali- ty are easy to see and it doesn't take long for visi- tors to recog- nize that they have hap- pened upon s o m e p l a c e special. My first memory of Oconomowoc is standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross busy Wisconsin Avenue on a bright spring day. My husband and I had just toured what would become our first home and were exploring what was to become our community. As we stood there waiting for a break in traffic that would allow us to scamper across, a startling thing happened. The cars stopped — in both lanes — and waited while we crossed. That single moment symbolizes the spirit that makes Oconomowoc special. We are neighbors. We care for, and about, our commu- nity and the people we share it with. We support the busi- nesses and organizations that make us vibrant. We volunteer our time and talent to create events like Moonlit Movies, The Festi- val of the Arts and the German Christmas Market which make us unique. We are a small town with access to all of the comforts of a much larger city. Summer is an amazing time to experience Ocono- mowoc. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Visit our Summer Farm- ers Market which hosts 50 vendors every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon through October. Spend a day at City Beach where you can splash to your heart's content or rent paddle boards, kayaks and canoes to explore historic Lac La Belle. A one block walk will bring you into downtown Oconomowoc and its restaurants, bou- tiques, galleries, coffee and ice cream shops. Festival Week is Aug. 15 to Aug. 21. The days leading up to the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts are chock full of free family fun and activities including Kids Fest, Moonlit Movies and Bands at the Beach. Visit our website at www.oconomowoc.org for more event information and details. My neighbors and I look forward to welcoming you to Oconomowoc. (Katie Miller can be reached at 262-567-2666.
