By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman WALES — You are years late for a party that shows no sign of stopping if you believe technology in educa- tion consists solely of each child taking home a school- issued digital device. The leaps and bounds in hardware and software are being seized by educators as a way to revolutionize and personalize the learning experience in ways previous- ly unthinkable. The teacher is no longer the only subject-matter expert. The walls of the building are irrelevant, and the methods for demonstrat- ing knowledge are almost limitless. The goal is using technology to open the world. Holly Myhre, director of digital learning for the Kettle Moraine School District, said part of her district's focus is on teaching students how to use technology to solve prob- lems in a future we don't yet know. The KMSD serves all or part of Delafield, Town of Delafield, Dousman, Town of Eagle, Town of Genesee, North Prairie, Town of Ottawa, Town of Sullivan, Summit and Wales. The district encompasses more than 90 square miles, and includes five elementary schools, one middle school, four high schools, an alterna- tive school and community center. KMSD's main office is in Wales. "We're teaching our kids how to code, beginning in the fourth grade," Myhre said. "We're teaching our kids how to do CAD (computer- aided drafting)." Myhre said students are using technology to examine issues in medical science, manufacturing and engi- neering. Lori Frank said the Lake Country School District in Hartland also utilizes technology across its cur- riculum. "It's more of a tool for indi- vidual instruction versus teaching the technology," said Frank, technology director at the LCSD. "Although we do have some formal technology classes, the drive is that the students have the technology available as a learning tool." Celebrate Oconomowoc!
