By Chris Bucher Freeman Staff LA CROSSE — The stage was set for Brookfield East's boys track and field team. With one event remaining, the Spartans were tied with Kettle Moraine (39 points) atop the team standings at the Division 1 WIAA Track and Field State Championships on June 4. In order to walk out of Vet- erans Memorial Stadium Division 1 team champions, the Spartans turned to the group of athletes that coach Mike Steiner and his assis- tants loaded up this season with this exact moment firm- ly in mind. East had to finish the 4x400- meter relay in the top six places and do it ahead of the Lasers in order to be crowned the state champs for the fourth time in the past six years. Despite being seeded eighth in the relay, the team of seniors Mario Carr and Drew Bullen and juniors Avery Barnes and Saxton Williams responded to the circum- stances, and they did it in a historic way. The Spartans blew away the field in the race, crossing the finish line first and shattering a state record that's been intact since before each of the members on the team was born (1990 by Nicolet). "It's really just unbeliev- able," Bullen, the anchor leg of the race, said. "All year, we talked about leaving a legacy, getting here and just being Brookfield East. Running as hard as we can, being team players out there and just run- ning and getting things done. "This was the best way it could have ended. Being a senior on the track, breaking the state record in the 4x4, it's unbelievable." The victory gave East the state championship (49 points), while Kettle Moraine and Middleton (41) tied for runners-up honors. "Our kids were motivated today," Steiner said. "They treated this like a business trip. They came up here to win it and that's how they approached it, and that's how we approached it as coaches. We knew we would have to have some breaks along the way and had to perform on the spot. But our kids are tough, they're pretty tough." Carr, who ran the opening leg of the relay, said the group realized the task at hand and completed it by doing what they've done all season. "I just put in work for four years straight and this is the best reward you could ask for," Carr said. "We were told we had to beat Kettle Moraine to win, so to us that means we have to win and that's basical- ly all we ever do, just try to win and leave it all out there. We left it there today." The relay race took place following a delay that lasted nearly two hours after light- ning was spotted in the area. Barnes said that despite the delay and the surrounding cir- cumstances, his relay team- mates wanted to be the ones to bring East the team title. "We were kind of the under- dog, but we weren't thinking of ourselves as that," Barnes, the third leg of the relay, said. "We knew we were going to win, but in the back of our heads, we were fighting for the team and we knew we had to beat out the guys in white, Kettle Moraine, to bring home the state championship." Following Carr's opening 400, Williams grabbed the baton and carried the slim lead to the 200-meter mark. That's where the race turned, as Williams powered around the corner and toward the home stretch, gaining a siz- able lead before handing to Barnes. Williams, who ran a person- al-best 400 time during the relay, said he knew a big bur- den was placed on his team entering the race. He added that he had to run the fastest time of his career if he want- ed to help accomplish the ulti- mate goal. "I was doing 50 (second 400s) all year, so I knew today was going to have to be the day if we were going to win this race," Williams said. "I was a little nervous, I never ran that fast in my life. So to go there, that's a huge accomplishment for me and that sets the bar even higher for me next year." The 4x400 capped an astounding two-day perfor- mance at the meet by the Spartans. Earlier in the day, the 4x200 relay team of Barnes, Williams, Bullen and senior Will Schmidt won the 4x200 in the closest finish of the day. When Bullen was handed the baton for the final leg by Schmidt, he was about 10 meters behind first place, sit- ting firmly in third. Bullen gained ground on the leaders and powered through to the finish, barely crossing the line first (1:26.95) before Plymouth (1:26.953) and Menomonee Falls (1:26.96). "He just came out of nowhere," Schmidt said. "I've never seen anyone run that fast in person. It's just a great help to have someone, a D-1 athlete running the anchor for you. He can catch anyone." The team of Williams, Schmidt, Bullen and sopho- more Morris Seaton also had a solid showing, placing sec- ond in the 4x100 (42.05). Menomonee Falls' team of juniors Amari Hackett, Patrick Doyle, senior Mason Jansen and freshman Vincent Zimmermann took third place (42.18). Mukwonago's team of seniors Zach Zaborowski, Keanu Komar, Collin Radow- icz and Liam Chones were right behind the Indians from Falls in fourth (42.44). Muskego's relay team of seniors Grant LeGros, Keith Kamer, Sam Sadowski and sophomore Justin Kotarak placed fifth. "Together, we help each other out. Nobody puts any- body down," Seaton said of the Spartans as a whole. "We could switch anybody out (in the relays) because everybody goes in, does their job and does really well." Steiner said because of the lineup he selected, it was vital the runners in each of the relay races came through. "Our goal was to win all three," Steiner said. "We thought with Drew in there that we could win all three and we almost did, but came up a bit short. You're putting a lot of pressure on those relays to do what they did. Every kid's got to perform, and it helps having Drew in there because I think those kids pay a little more attention to detail and because they know they've got Drew in there, they don't want to not run well because they knew the route we took, they knew that was the path for us." On Friday, Bullen took sec- ond in the long jump to add eight points to the team total. East gained six more points in the 300 hurdles Saturday, with Carr taking third. He said he wanted to clear his mind for the event and just do what he does best. "I had triple jump in the morning and I didn't even make finals, so I was a little disappointed by that," Carr said. "I knew I had to help the team out, I had to do some- thing special in the 3s. So I just got in the zone, left triple jump behind me and just got out and went for it." Spartans senior Cameron Allen-Aylsworth contributed four points toward the team total after he placed fifth in the discus (162-2). The podium placing came one day after senior Mike Caliendo took sixth in the shot put (56-4.5) to add three additional points. "Our throws made a differ- ence," Steiner said. "This is our first time we've got points out of our throwers. They were strong all year and pro- duced for us." Steiner said the feeling of hoisting another first-place trophy is dream-like, but couldn't have been accom- plished without such a group of kids buying into what the program is all about. "It's kind of surreal, it real- ly is," Steiner said. "You do this and it's hard to do. I appreciate it more with the way the last two years went, after what we had done and we didn't win. Man, is it hard to win this thing. You've got to put it all together in these two days. This group was all about leaving their legacy and this is all about the kids, we're so happy for the kids. That's what it's all about. "We had a great group of seniors and underclassmen that followed in line. We've got good kids. Our kids are tough, tough mentally, they're tough physically and they take to the coaching and that's what the coaches coach. We try to get our kids to be tough, so I think we succeeded this year."
