Tell me a little bit about Elm Grove. A.) We are a village that is about two miles by two miles and we have around 2,500 households. There are over 200 businesses in the village, some with retail locations and others in offices or home offices. Toward the end of 2014, Business Insider Magazine named Elm Grove "The Best Suburb in America," not in Wisconsin or the Mid- west, in America! There were 300 candidate communities. The criteria had to do with school ratings, income levels, home values and public safety. Q.) Why do people choose to live, work and own businesses in Elm Grove? A .) Living here is like living in a park! It's an official bird sanctuary, has a number of churches, has its own library, a stellar police department, all-volunteer EMT squads and volunteer (paid-on-call) fire department. We have our own Village Park with a pond. We have soccer fields, tennis courts, a heated swim- ming pool and toddler wading pool, volley- ball sand pits, walking paths and a fishing pier. Our local government is one of the purest forms of governance. All of our elected officials are unpaid volun- teers. All of the members of the various committees are unpaid volunteers. We have a very active Business Associa- tion, Junior Guild and Woman's Club. Q.) What are some upcom- ing events? A.) The July 4th "Family Fun Fest" is the biggest event in the village, sponsored by the village. It is an all-day and evening happening, culminat- ing in fabulous fireworks by Bartolotta's at 9:30 p.m. Activities include a fun run, bike decorating contest, games and races all afternoon sponsored by the Junior Guild, a baking contest, music all evening, and food served all day and evening by the Elmbrook Rotary Club. This year we will have the "Declaration of Indepen- dence" for everyone to sign, in honor of the 240th anniver- sary. The other fantastic event that just occurred is our Memorial Day Parade spon- sored by the Junior Guild, with food by the Elm Grove Business Association. In the fall we have the Holiday Open House, sponsored by the Elm Grove Business Association. The association also produces the annual village calendar which is distributed to every home and business in the village. (Mary Inden represents the Elm Grove Business Associa- tion.)
