Ozaukee County Guide

Local people have been supporting Advocates of Ozaukee's ongoing efforts to end domestic and sexual violence in a variety of ways since the shelter opened in 1980. And every year, Mequon native Willy Porter picks up his guitar and joins in on those efforts with a benefit concert. "Willy has done this concert for us for a little more than 10 years – it's a very big deal for us – and he's raised over $100,000," said Advocates Executive Director Barb Fisher. "It first started through Willy's mom's neighbor, who was involved with Advocates at the time. She talked to Willy's mom, and she encouraged him to do it." Much of Advocates' funding comes from government sources and grants, which means that it is earmarked for specific purposes. The money raised from this concert is important, as Advocates is able to use it as operational needs arise. "So, for example, we had a computer that we turned on this morning and it just decided to shut itself off," said Fischer. "Because of this concert, we have funds to take care of things like that. It is a wonderful help to us."
