Racine Ave., hosted a mini appraisal fair that turned out not so mini! Attendees were waiting when the doors opened and the day flew by with a steady stream of diverse items for the five certified appraisers to value. Over 100 tickets were sold and the proceeds of $500 was donated to the Waukesha County Historical Society. A few of the notable trea- sures brought in for evalua- tion were: A ladies intricate gold pocket watch with an engraved owl perched on a diamond-studded moon A hand-sewn 46-star American flag with family history that it may have flown at a World's Fair A collection of swords and daggers, including a Russian cavalry sword Elegant vintage purses Arts & crafts table lamp Hand-stitched quilts Superb, signed pottery French boudoir chair Green Bay Packers memorabilia Only verbal appraisals were shared along with lots of advice and information on how to care for family heirlooms. Attendees found out that age does not neces- sarily equate to a high value. Many items are old and valuable but many more items are only old. When cleaning out a prop- erty, you might want to have things checked out before throwing anything in a garbage bin — you could be throwing money away! Condition has much more to do with value than ever before. Buyers are looking for objects with no modifi- cation, repaint, repairs or updates. Collectors of high- ticket items are extremely particular and insistent that their purchase is in near-mint original condi- tion and will pay more for those items. Although a few people were disappointed to learn their treasure was a repro- duction or replica, all were appreciative for this service to the community and to know more about their per- sonal family keepsakes. Special thanks goes to the manager, Penny Olson, for her time in coordinating all the details for this event. Always remember: An antique is a memory that you can touch with your hand! Have an item for appraisal? Tell us about it and it could be selected for a future column. Mail entries to Waukesha Antique Shop, 1427 E. Racine Ave., Unit E- 2, Waukesha, WI 53186. Send sharp, well-lit photos of front, back and under- side of your item, and mea- surements are important. List any known history or even hearsay, length of ownership and all mark- ings, even partial ones. Include your name, address and phone number. No pho- tos can be returned and no purchase of antiques will occur.
