Man allegedly stole checks from child care center NEW BERLIN — A Milwaukee man allegedly stole and cashed checks from Innovation Station in New Berlin. Quarterrious Gaines, 30, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Aug. 21 with three counts of unauthorized use of an entity's identifying infor- mation or documents and possession of THC, second and subsequent offense. According to a criminal complaint, the child care center's owner informed police in April that a checkbook had been stolen from the business and some checks were cashed throughout March in Gaines' name. The owner said Gaines works for a company which occasionally cleans the business. Gaines initially said he found the checks in a Dumpster outside Innovation Station, but later admitted that he had taken them from inside the business, the complaint said. He said he deposited about $2,000 into his checking account because he needed money to support his grandmother. 4 • Milwaukee County Post • August 28, 2015 WEEK IN REVIEW STATE AND LOCAL STORIES OF INTEREST MPD: Felon arrested in South Side armed robbery MILWAUKEE — With the help of surveillance video, officers from District Six of the Milwaukee Police Department reported arresting a convicted felon wanted in a South Side armed robbery. Officers responded to the Family Dollar store at 3045 S. 13th St. at 7:10 p.m. Monday for a report of an armed robbery. Employees told police a suspect came into the store with a knife and demanded money from the register. The suspect did not take any money from the register but then demand- ed money from a customer, which was handed over to him, police said. The store's sur- veillance video showed the suspect going into a home in the 2900 block of South 14th Street, according to police. Officers said they found the suspect, a 25-year-old Milwaukee man, inside the home and took him into custody. The suspect is a convicted felon and has a criminal record dating back to 2011, police reported. Ten drunken drivers arrested, including 4th OWI offender MILWAUKEE — Among the 10 people arrested for drunken driving over the weekend was Isaac Taylor, 37, of Milwaukee, for felony OWI- fourth offense, after he allegedly registered nearly four times the legal limit. A deputy said he found him asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle point- ed southbound on Interstate 43 near West Becher Street at 4:20 a.m. Saturday. Taylor told the deputy who woke him up that he had pulled over after his vehicle became disabled. Taylor tested a 0.30 on a preliminary breath test and deputies found a glass pipe and a corner-cut baggie of crack cocaine, according to the Sheriff's Office. Because Taylor's last OWI conviction was in January 2014 — within the last five years of the latest offense — the charge is elevated to a felony offense. If convicted on his fourth arrest, he faces up to six years in prison. Milwaukee woman allegedly sent harassing messages to former boyfriend's nanny WAUKESHA — Kristin Sammons, 34, of Milwaukee, was charged Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court with sending harassing emails to the nanny of her ex- boyfriend this summer. According to a criminal complaint, a nanny at a New Berlin res- idence reported receiving several vulgar, harassing and threatening text messages from various phone numbers, with one showing several photos of dead women and the warn- ing "You will be next," and another message warning her to "Get ready to meet ur maker." Some of the messages were traced to Sammons, who allegedly used a program to mask her phone number, the complaint said. Sammons was the ex-girlfriend of a man who hired the nanny, it added. Sammons admitted sending the messages, saying she sent such messages to people she felt were harassing her; she believes the complaining wit- ness entered the man's life and turned him and his kids against Sammons, the complaint said. Sammons was ordered held on a $5,000 cash bond. Havas appointed to Milwaukee County Circuit Court MILWAUKEE — Attorney Michelle Ackerman Havas of Franklin has been appoint- ed to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court bench, Gov. Scott Walker announced in a state- ment. Havas will fill the seat previously held by Judge Rebecca Bradley. Havas comes to the bench from the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, where she has served as an assistant district attorney since 2002. While there, she pros- ecuted a wide variety of complex civil litigation cases involving issues of children's rights and successfully argued before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Havas spent the early years of her legal career with Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek in Milwaukee, where she focused on commercial litigation, insurance defense, consumer transaction and professional liability matters. Prior to her career as a lawyer, Havas was employed as a probation and parole agent at the state Department of Corrections. In 2014, Havas was presented with the Women in the Law Award from the Wisconsin Law Journal. "She has a deep respect for the rule of law," Milwaukee County Circuit Judge John DiMotto wrote in support of Havas, "and understands that the role of a judge is to administer the law as given by the legislature and not to legislate from the bench."
