Sheriff: Jail staffing puts workers, inmates at risk MILWAUKEE – Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. last week notified county officials that staffing levels to run the state's largest jail facility are inadequate. Clarke said he is short 70 corrections officers because the county's Human Resources Department can't keep up with demand and blamed County Executive Chris Abele. "Abele's office controls hiring and recruitment. My office has been told by county HR officials that they themselves do not have the staffing to keep up with hiring and that they do not have the advertising budget needed to help with recruitment. That is unaccept- able," Clarke said, adding that the use of overtime with overly tired officers isn't ade- quate. He said 257 corrections officers are budgeted but there are 180 with another 14 unfit for full duty. The officers are responsible for feeding, caring and transporting nearly 1,000 inmates, including watching for suicidal signs, Clarke said. "Additionally, inadequate staffing puts the safety of corrections officers and civilian employees, including medical staff, at risk. Inadequate staffing also endangers inmates when arguments start between inmates that cannot be quickly quelled," he said. "This is a disaster waiting to happen and county officials are on notice." 4 • Milwaukee County Post • July 31, 2015 WEEK IN REVIEW STATE AND LOCAL STORIES OF INTEREST Armed robbery suspects arrested after foot chase MILWAUKEE — Police said they arrested two suspects after they stole a car at gun- point and tried to flee from officers.
