What's to like? A lot, locals say Location, schools, atmosphere make area desirable By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD — One is a teach- er, another is in marketing and another is a systems manager and elected official. One moved from Milwaukee, the other from Wauwatosa and the third is a resident of more than 25 years. The diversity of their back- grounds aside, Brooke Kutschera, Deb Halada and Keith Henderson all live in the Brookfield-Elm Grove area for remarkably similar rea- sons. Kutschera and her family live in Brookfield. She and her husband, Steve, wanted to raise their chil- dren away from Milwaukee and in area with exceptional schools. Deb Halada and her family live in Elm Grove, and do so because of the schools, parks, and sense of community, in addition to proximi- ty to Milwaukee. Henderson lives in the Town of Brookfield, loves his neighborhood and is working to enact change that will positively affect the communi- ty forever. Throughout this month's issue, Brookfield & Elm Grove This Month looked at what it is that makes this area exceptional. Here is an intimate look at a slice of each community's most valuable asset — its citizens. Brooke Kutschera Brooke and her husband, Steve, moved to Brookfield more than three years ago. They moved from the 2400 block of North 55th Street in Milwaukee to the 700 block of Park- moor Drive in Brookfield. "We wanted to be somewhere safe, and with a lower tax rate," Brooke Kutschera said. "We have found the most amazing schools." Her son, Joe, is 12, and in seventh grade at Wisconsin Hills Middle School. Her daughter, Naomi, is 10 and in fifth grade at Swanson Ele- mentary. "The neighborhood we live in is fabulous," she said. "It is an answer to a prayer. Every month that goes by, I meet new people. "We feel very welcome here. We feel very much a part of this com- munity, even though we were new- comers." Kutschera said she and her fami- ly are staying in Brookfield for as long as possible. She said she is not interested in moving. "That may just be that I don't ever want to deal with moving again, but I want to stay here as long as we're supposed to," she said. Deb Halada "Elm Grove is just like a hidden gem," Deb Halada said. "It's a close trip to Milwaukee. It's a close trip to Lake Country. It's a great place to raise your kids." Halada works in marketing and lives on Underwood River Parkway near Tonawanda Elementary School with her husband, Larry, and two children Evan, 16, and Erin, 14. Both attend Brookfield East High School. Halada joined the Junior Guild shortly after moving to Elm Grove eight years ago, and said she's met some of her closest friends through her involve- ment with the organi- zation. Halada also spoke to a feeling of sim- plicity surrounding life in Elm Grove, and ticked off a list of community amenities that she said she treasures: the Fourth of July parade, the Memorial Day parade, the small-business owners, park system, public concerts and more. Halada also said Elm Grove is a very safe community, and she's been comfortable allowing Erin to ride her bike throughout the com- munity since she became old enough to find her way home. "It's hard to explain," Halada said. "You feel like you're in the 'Andy Griffith Show.' It's Mayberry. Everybody knows everybody. It's a really tight-knit community." Keith Henderson Keith Henderson's place at the table differs from that of most in the Town of Brookfield. He has been an elected official since 1995, and the town chairman since 1997. He's lived in the town continu- ously since 1986, and is working to make the Town of Brookfield the Village of Brookfield. The benefits of being a village versus a town are home rule and control over zoning and land issues and the ability to fix bound- aries and protect one's borders. The change will likely have little impact on the culture of the town. "We have all of the services that you need for a larger community, but it's really more in a local, rural area," Henderson said. Henderson said he's grown fond of his neighborhood over the years. "I like my neighbors," Hender- son said. "We have a good time together, and as our families were all growing up, we grew up togeth- er." He said the congeniality among neighbors manifested itself in vol- leyball games, picnics and barbe- cues. "It was really a very nice place to grow up, for my son to grow up," said Henderson , who lives in the 500 block of South Allen Road and is a systems manager for Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson.
