The Warhawks won the WIAA Division 1 state team tournament at Wisconsin Rapids High School, giving the school its third state title. Arrowhead also won state gymnastics titles in 2009 and 2010. Arrowhead was just one of four programs to not co-op among the 10 Division 1 state qualifiers. "I told the girls that we are one of 10 schools competing today on paper, but in reality we were going against over 20," Arrowhead coach Bob Pulkowski said. "We made it through a tough sectional, and we were ready." The Warhawks scored 148.333, as the top four teams have Waukesha County ties. The Franklin/Muskego/ Oak Creek/Whitnall co-op was second at 146.4667, the Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine co-op third with 144.1667 and the Brookfield co-op fourth with 138.7333. Senior Jorin Fredman led Arrowhead's charge Friday. Fredman posted team-best scores on balance beam (9.633) and floor exercise (9.417) while posting the team's second-best mark on uneven bars (9.683) and vault (9.7). Junior Taryn Sherman posted a team-best 9.767 on uneven bars for Arrowhead, and junior Marissa Kildow scored a team-best 9.717 on vault. Balance beam was a high- scoring event for Arrow- head, as Sherman posted a 9.383, senior Haley Dunn scored 9.283 and junior Tiana Rohe scored 9.167. Sherman posted Arrow- head's second-best mark on floor exercise with an 8.85. Kildow added a 9.133 on uneven bars, and Sherman posted a 9.383 on vault. While some names rose to the top, the Warhawks know it took a deep roster to capture the title. "We keep everyone and don't cut," Pulkowski said. "We build our team togeth- er, and we take everyone and everyone is going to love everyone." Junior Sam Balcerak posted a team-best 9.422 on balance beam for FMOW, while junior Erin Scholz scored 9.067 and senior Taylor Oleszak a 9.017. Bal- cerak scored a team-best 9.383 on floor exercise, Scholz a 9.367 and senior Jerica Kotarak a 9.25. Scholz led FMOW with a 9.6 on uneven bars, Balcerak scored 9.6 and Kotarak 9.367. Kotarak led the team with a 9.65 on vault, and Scholz scored 9.417. Senior Elise Rice led Mukwonago/KM on vault with a 9.317, senior Sadie Bishop scored 9.3 and junior Lauren Reese 9.0). Junior Brooke Kangas scored a team-best 9.2 on uneven bars, junior Nicole Confare scored 9.167 and Reese scored 9.067. Kangas scored 9.433 on floor, junior Allie Siekierski 9.167 and Rice 9.0. Reese led the co- op on beam with a 9.05. Sophomore Caitlin Locante led Brookfield with a team-best 9.33 on beam and team-best 9.483 on floor. She was second on the team with a 9.1 on uneven bars and 9.033 on vault. Junior Amanda Pennow scored a team-best 9.383 on uneven bars. Freshman Alexis Romero scored a team-best 9.45 on vault. Romero also scored 9.217 on floor, and Pennow had a 9.0 on floor. — Freeman Staff Sean Davis of the Wisconsin State Journal contributed to this story. Brookfield 138.7333 Rough patch dooms Pirates against Rapids By Pat Neumuth Freeman Staff MADISON — Before a match, every wrestling coach looks over the lineups to check matchups. Pewaukee High School coach Ed Kurth did just that, and looking at Wisconsin Rapids' 14 weight classes the Pirates weren't favored in many of them. "Twenty-six, 32 and 45," Kurth said. "Those were wins we had to have. We made three errors, and it cost us 15 points. We had to get three out of four from 113 through 145, and we got one out of four." Three straight losses in those crucial matches (126, 132 and 145) for Pewaukee turned a tie into a 41-24 Rapids victory in a WIAA team state quarterfinal dual at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin Field House. "But I don't think we wres- tled just happy to be here, which is good," Kurth said. "I thought we wrestled very hard to win." Rapids coach Scott Benitz also tweaked his lineup for maximum success, and his first move failed. Rapids put 170-pound state qualifier Nathan Fuller at 182 against Pewaukee senior Jacob Beck- er. After a 2-2 score going into the third period, Becker got a takedown with 6 seconds left for a 4-3 advantage. But a foul on the ensuing restart pushed the match into overtime. That's when Becker used his size to his advantage with a hip-throw takedown to secure the victory in the first match. "That was the goal. I wanted to set the tone," Becker said. "Our goal was always to get back to state again, and I thought we had this one. But to be here is the ultimate goal." Pewaukee sophomore Blaze Beltran was one of the few heavily favored wrestlers, and he maximized his points at 220 with a pin in less than a second before the first-period buzzer sounded. Senior Giovanni Guarnero almost pulled off an upset at 285 against senior state cham- pion Beau Thompson, but two late takedowns weren't enough and Guarnero lost 9-7. After a pin at 106, Rapids led 12-9. Kurth juggled his lineup at 113, and it paid off. Fresh- man Eric Halverson — listed at 120 — moved down to face junior state qualifier Matrix Jisko. Halverson almost pinned Jisko twice, but took a 10-8 victory instead. Halver- son's victory tied the score at 12 halfway through the dual. "Our 106-pounder fights well, but gets pinned. Our 120- pounder fights well and gets pinned," Kurth said. "Halver- son beats a state qualifier, then that 126-pound match." Pewaukee sophomore Jacob Duncan bumped up two weight classes from his nor- mal 113 to wrestle Rapids sophomore Max Benitz. Despite giving up weight, Duncan was in position to win the match leading 1-0 with about 30 seconds left. But he went for a shot, Benitz countered and pinned Dun- can in 5:26. "We were winning with 30 seconds left and they weren't able to score on him," Kurth said. "It's only if we make a mistake, and we made a mistake. But I will say (Duncan) wrestled at 113 all year." Kurth said that match was a back-breaker, but there were other matches where mistakes cost the team some points. Junior Ted Never- mann was edged 5-0 against freshman Bergh Diebel, and senior Matt Fritchen was pinned by Dylan Hall in 2:28 with Hall up just 2-1 at the time. After those matches, Rapids was up 33-18 and Pewaukee couldn't recover. "They were 50-1 heading into team state, and I thought we were in good shape at 12-12," Kurth said. "Three words: Position, position, position. We got out of position a few times, and it's not like Rapids stayed in position. They cap- italized when we got out of position. "It's kind of an honor to wrestle Rapids at team state, because of what they do and what they've done. They don't just capitalize for a takedown and a win for three points. They get a pin and knock you out." Sandwiched between those losses was Pewaukee senior Isaac Lodise's pin at 138. Also heavily favored in his match, Pewaukee desper- ately needed a pin at the time and he came through. "I wanted to stick the guy to get it over with," Lodise said. "You feel kind of accomplished (winning your last match), but you still feel empty inside because you lost." Rapids junior state cham- pion Brock Benitz put the dual out of reach with a 19-2 technical fall at 152. Pewau- kee sophomore Jacob Rasch- ka pinned his opponent in 1:27 in the final match at 170. He was the last of the Pewaukee wrestlers favored in his matchup. "Beating (Whitnall /Greendale) in the sectional really felt great, and it kind of felt like justice," Lodise said about his fondest mem- ory of this season. "It was the best feeling of my life, honestly. (Rapids) was way better this year than last year. They are always better. They are Rapids."
