That's the conclusion Besharat arrived at after a recent assignment called a "passion project," which allowed her and her Horizon Elementary School class- mates to choose a topic of special interest to them, research it and present their findings. The concept is inspired by Google's "20 percent time," in which employees are encour- aged to spend one-fifth of their time on a pet project. It's based on the idea that pro- ductivity and creativity increase when people have the freedom to work on what they want. And if it's good enough for Google, Horizon sixth-grade teacher Julie Reuter decided to try it with her class. Like Besharat, all of Reuter's students chose one topic, formulated an "essen- tial question" and dove into weeks of research, aided by having Chromebooks in hand. As part of the Pewau- kee School District's one-to- one device initiative, each student in grades 5-12 has his or her own laptop. Among the project topics were: Which will live longer, a betta or goldfish? What caused the Trojan War? Will crayons sink or float in salt- water?
