Reuter, who's been teaching for 20 years, said students' access to technology makes these kinds of projects possible. Before the days of one-to-one devices, she said, classes were interrupted by having to relo- cate to the library or computer lab. Now, technology is weaved in and out of her lessons every day. With students now having 24/7 access to search engines, Reuter said they need to learn more than how to look up basic facts. "It used to be students were tested on limited, Google-search type questions," she said. "That's not what education is about anymore. It's about really broad questions that they need to do a lot of research on to answer." Passion projects, Reuter said, stretches students' thinking, while also allowing them to learn what they want. "It's not about the digital tools, it's about how is it going to take them to the next level of lifelong lear ning skills that they will need for the careers that haven't even been created yet," she said. She added that, as a teacher of tech-savvy sixth-graders, she has to embrace the idea that students will always come in knowing more about technology. "Because it is always chang- ing, you have to be open to changing with it," she said. "You have to realize that you have a roomful of tech leaders." With Chromebook in hand, sixth-grader Lily Keller stepped through her project, which allowed her to answer a ques- tion that had piqued her curios- ity. "I did my project on, If I were to ask a person to tell me their most embarrassing moment, would they tell me?" After 11 interviews, she deter- mined trust was a big factor in people's willingness to share and that girls get more embar- rassed over small things.
