The Brookfield Central High School senior, out for the sport for the first time this season, has now been in the pit, on the turf and on the mat for the Lancers. He got Central off to a perfect start in the team's crosstown rivalry wrestling match against Brookfield East with the night's fastest pin — a 34- second effort — and the Lancers went on to win their Greater Metro Con- ference dual against the Spartans 55-21. Hor ner-Ibler was going to try out for the basketball team but was dissuaded by wrestling teammates and wrestling coach Chris Demos — Demos pointing out, "You're 5-foot-7, 250 pounds and you belong on a wrestling mat." So he figured why not? "It's the same fundamen- tal game (as football): Be strong," the all-conference football center said. "I was taking a test after school and some of my friends were in the room. They put the thought in my head and a week later coach talked to me about it. "My brother, David, had been an unofficial wrestler helping out the team and coach told me if I wrestled like him, I'd do well. My real goal is to lose weight." But couldn't he just have done that on a treadmill or something? "I've never given wrestling the credit it deserves as a workout," said Hor ner-Ibler, would like to get down to 195 pounds from his 251-pound starting weight, even though he competes in the 285 weight class. "And I love the teamwork and the competition." Hor ner-Ibler is also an accomplished musician (drum major, tuba) and in fact started the season in the orchestra pit for the school's production of "Peter Pan." He also is a weight man (shot put and discus) on the track team and a contribut- ing editor on the school newspaper. So what's one more thing? "He's one heck of an ath- letic big guy," Demos said. East freshman Dominic Dentino quickly erased Cen- tral's 6-0 lead with a 39-sec- ond pin, but the Lancers won the next six matches — two by forfeit — for a 30-6 advantage, and with another forfeit coming up at 195 pounds East was in big trou- ble. "We have a young team (only three seniors)," said East assistant coach Kevin Holzem, who was filling in for Mike Weller. Weller was at a hospital with his wife following the birth of their first child, a boy, the day before. "Our seniors went out and did what they needed to do, but this is a rebuild- ing year and it showed in some of the matches," Holzem said. "It was (Cen- tral's) night. "I'm not satisfied when any of the kids lose, but everyone went out and gave a good effort but we have some work to do." Seniors David Wertz (145), Josh Dempsey (160) and PJ LeClaire (220) all won for the Spartans. Dempsey, the lone return- ing WIAA state-meet qualifi- er from either team, pinned his opponent in 3:37. There were a pair of two- point decisions — the closest matches of the night — and each school won one of them: Derek Nicholas of Central, 11-9 over Malcolm Vetter; and Wertz 5-3 over Eli Were at 145. "I was pleased," Demos said. "We showed some aggressiveness and a lot of toughness after I thought we were a little flat in our previ- ous match against Hamil- ton. Alumni Night helped and our mistakes were very limited. Any kind of win is good just to get things going."
