Bluemound Rd 2 3 5 9 2 5 0 0 1 By Todd Hansen Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD — Despite losing, the Brookfield Cen- tral girls volleyball team got a huge dose of confi- dence against cross-town rival Brookfield East dur- ing a weekend tournament. East entered last month's Muskego Invitational ranked No. 5 in the Divi- sion 1 coaches association state poll — but the unranked Lancers won one of three games and had a set point in one of the loss- es. That confidence carried over to the team's next meeting, when the Lancers stunned the Spartans in a Greater Metro Conference match 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 25- 11, 15-6. Playing the Spartans nearly even in the tourna- ment was a big factor in the Lancers' mindset on this day. "It was real competitive then too and helped our confidence tenfold," Cen- tral coach Scott Spiess said. "Everyone knew that Brookfield East was sup- posed to be good and nobody really knew about us. It was going to be a work in progress and take some time to put it all together. I think beating them, even in a set over the weekend, brought some confidence coming into tonight. "We just persevered. I thought we outplayed them both in the first and second set. It was a just a matter of a couple of points late in games. We got a little rat- tled. We had opportunities and didn't take advantage of them. We've been preaching to continue working hard and extend- ing rallies and make the other teams make errors." After losing the two close games to begin the match, Central appeared to be on the short end again in the third game trailing 13-8, as East junior outside hitter Louise Kiekhofer had two of her team-high 18 kills in the scoring spree. Kiekhofer also had 19 digs to pace the Spartans. Following a timeout, the Lancers outscored East 8-3 to tie the score at 16-16 after an ace by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Uczen. The Lancers continued to ride their momentum by going on a 9-3 run to finish the game that ended on a kill by junior middle block- er Abigail Strebig. "Coming out of the time- out in the third set things weren't looking good there and the only thing we addressed in the timeout was body language," Spiess said. "We talked about out- playing them in the first two sets but if the body language starts to go you start to feed off the wrong energy and that can lead to more mistakes. We just tried to correct that and I think we did a good job at that and we were able to shift the momentum. "I think it's just butter- flies anytime you play Brookfield East; everyone wants it so we just tried to limit our errors as much as we could." Central then dominated the fourth game as junior Aileen Herman had five of her team-high 16 kills in the victory. "We were a little flat in the beginning and didn't have much energy and we let the errors kind of get to us," Herman said. "In the end we really cleaned up our errors, came together as a team. "Playing them this week- end it gave us confidence because we knew they were ranked No. 5 and we weren't ranked so it was a huge confidence builder to play them so close." East coach Chris Polowy saw his team lose its focus as the match wore on. "The girls lost their confi- dence by being too comfort- able and that's kind of what happened," Polowy said. "I have faith in this team and we've got great individual players. Now we just have to be better at putting it togeth- er as a unit." "We have to move forward and we have some things to think about it how it went down tonight." Central took control of the final game right from the start, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after a kill by Herman and eventually an East error on match point sealed the victory for the Lancers. Freshman setter Miranda Wucherer led the Lancers with 32 assists while sopho- more setter Marissa Zepecki added 26 assists. Junior out- side hitter Shannon Kebisek had 24 digs and Uczen 21 digs and four aces for Cen- tral. Senior libero Shannon Bayne also had 19 digs for East while senior setter Petra Bryda had 21 assists.
