There still is no cure for dementia, but the Alzheimer's Association of Southeastern Wisconsin is hoping to change that. The association hosts annual galas, art auctions and charitable walks to raise awareness and money for the cause. The Waukesha County Walk to End Alzheimer's, run by the Alzheimer's Asso- ciation of Southeastern Wisconsin, has raised over half a million dollars since it started in 2010 by Waukesha couple Kay and Peter Lettenberger. The two had been family friends, and both lost their first spouse to Alzheimer's. Kay lost her husband Frank Ruekert Sr. and Peter lost his wife Barbara. The two found new life together and have worked to help the growing need for information, care and support for more than 8,500 Waukesha County residents diagnosed with Alzheimer's and their fam- ilies. Projections from the Wisconsin Depart- ment of Health Services indicate that number will increase by about 50 percent as baby boomers age, which makes finding a cure even more essential. Until Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia can be stopped, local services are active in helping people developing mental problems cope with reality and continue to maintain a quality of life. The Aging and Disability Resource Cen- ter of Waukesha County is sometimes the first to assess whether a person may be developing Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. They often will receive a call from a con- cerned family member or neighbor who has noticed strange or forgetful behavior. "We all forget things, for sure, but there are very distinct differences," Luann Page, ADRC manager said. If a person forgets very common names of things or people they have known for a while, that could be an indicator, accord- ing to Page. Sometimes a person may get up at up at night because they feel the need to perform a task, but forget what that might be and walk around aimlessly instead. If someone reaches out to the ADRC on behalf of a loved one or neighbor, the agency will contact the person and ask them to perform assessment tests. Some tests are simply recognizing names of ani- mals or putting numbers in order on a clock. Recently, the ADRC was given a grant to add a dementia care specialist to its staff. If a loved one is diagnosed, it might be hard to know what to do next. Living with a form of dementia can be dangerous if the person might leave the stove on or for- get how to return home. Assisted living homes like Silverado Memory Care Center at 1105 Davidson Road are designed to help aging seniors who are developing mental disabilities. Their main goal is to help residents remain social and continue to enjoy the things that were important to them before their diagnosis. "We try and give those with Alzheimer's a strong sense of purpose," said Pamela Preston, the administrator at Silverado. One way Silverado helps make dementia easier to bear is holding events that invite children and pets to make company with the elderly. Preston recalled a time in mid-August when Silverado held water-fun children's event and was pleased to watch everyone interact and enjoy each other. "It creates a really completely unique atmosphere," Preston said. Daily (closed Sept. 2 to 5): Public ice skating, noon to 2 p.m. week- days, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekends, Eble Ice Arena, 19400 W.
