First-year Brookfield Central coach Jed Kennedy envisions his team as "a viper in the weeds," ready to strike at opponents who may think that gradua- tion losses will end a streak of four straight playoff appearances and seven in the last eight seasons. But Kennedy, who guided Kenosha Bradford teams to five straight playoff berths from 2007 to a state title in 2011, isn't buying into a downfall. "There's a great tradition here and they've relied on that in the past with great results," Kennedy said. "We are young. Any time you return only five of your 22 starters, there's going to be some growing pains. Of our 11 coaches, only one was on staff last season, so there's new philosophies — but our sea- son goal is to be playing our best foot- ball at the end of the season and be in the playoffs." Senior linebacker Mitchell Ahmad (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) and junior defen- sive back Joe DuBois (6-0, 175) return on defense, and senior running backs Matt Patterson (6-1, 190) and Mattias Hoehnen (6-4, 220) and junior lineman Henry Ritchie (6-3, 290) return on offense. "We'll be playing a lot of kids who were backups last season," Kennedy said. This year's team will boast good size, but Kennedy acknowledges a weakness in "everything is new," including an offense that transforms from a shotgun to under-center option. "Our playbook's tripled," Kennedy said. And with the graduation loss of quarterback Riley Richarz, who had a hand in 29 touchdowns, and running back Demario Harris, the offense could be challenged. Expected starters on offense are: junior Dom Labellarte (5-10, 145) at quarterback; Hoehnen and juniors Malik Turner (5-6, 200) and Logan Meyer (5-9, 155) at running back; junior Michael Hauser (6-2, 215) at tight end, junior MJ Lucas (6-2, 195) at split end; and seniors Jacob Gravekamp (6-4, 215), Michael Horner-Ibler (6-1, 245) and Joey Baker (6-3, 215) and juniors Ritchie, Bran- don Hughes (6-1, 240) and Joey Kop- pelman (6-3, 240) on the line. The defense will include senior George Panos (5-8, 235) and junior Brandon Hughes (6-1, 240) on the line; Ahmad, Patterson and juniors Mitchell Dragotta (5-9, 180) and John Schneider (6-0, 195) at linebacker; and DuBois, senior Keagan Owens (5-10, 170) and juniors Buc Nellen (6-0, 175) and Evan Liebetrau (6-0, 170) in the secondary. New coach focused on success Brookfield Central Coach: Jed Kennedy, first season 2013: 7-3 overall, 5-2 Greater Metro Key returning player: senior LB Mitchell Ahmad Promising newcomers: junior QB Dom Labellarte, junior RB Malik Turner and junior linemen Joey Koppelman and Brandon Hughes Coach Kennedy's conference favorites: Marquette and Hamilton Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman Jed Kennedy is in his first season as coach at Brookfield Central. By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD — Tom Swittel and Brookfield East haven't missed yet. And they have yet to be picked for playoff success. Swittel, entering his fifth season as Brookfield East's coach, has guided the Spar- tans to WIAA playoff appearances in his four pre- vious seasons — a school record following a six-year absence — and Swittel notes, "We've never once been picked to make the playoffs during that time." Depth could prove to be the deciding factor if the Spar- tans are to advance for a fifth time. "We replaced a lot of guys last year and made the play- offs, but this is a different group," Swit- tel said. "Last year we had depth. This year's group doesn't." With nine full- or part-time starters retur ning, Swittel has a good base, but "there's no way we can two-platoon as we did last season," he said. The key will be balanc- ing his top players between offense and defense. "In the past we played our best players on defense and the others on offense," Swit- tel said. "We don't have an area with tons of good play- ers. If I was worried about just an offensive line, we'd have a very good offensive line — but in terms of varsi- ty-ready players, this is probably the lowest number we've had since I got here. We have enough players, but the way things shake out position-wise because we're really thin in some areas, will be crucial." Two of the team's best players may be senior punter/kicker Connor Allen (6-foot, 155 pounds), who is receiving national attention, and senior linebacker Micah Childs (5-10, 220). But the team may be without senior P.J. LeClaire, a first-team All-Greater Metro center who tore an anterior cruci- ate ligament last year during wrestling, whose return to football is questionable. "Allen's our X factor," Swittel said. "He's that rare kid, who, by virtue of his punting and kicking, can decide a game." Senior linebacker Drew Hepperla (5-10, 195), senior receiver/defensive back Chad Kluender (5-8, 155) senior lineman Will Wiemero (6-2, 255), junior lineman Mike Caliendo (6-4, 265), junior lineman Jack Leonovicz (6-2, 230), junior receiver/defensive back Mitch Mikulsky (5-9, 160) and sophomore lineman/running back Sam Santiago-Lloyd (5-10, 220) have started. But Santiago- Lloyd suffered an injury in the first game of the season. East did have a 7-2 junior varsity team, although Swit- tel said, "J.V. records mean nothing. We play juniors on our J.V. team while some teams do not, but guys who played well will be factoring in." Junior T.C. Swittel (5-10, 160) and Allen are the lead- ing quarterback candidates to replace graduated Zach Damico, a 1,000-yard passer and runner. With senior Corey Smith (5-10, 165) also at running back, the team appears to have offensive weapons. "We know what we have and the kids know what we have. and our goal is to do the best we can," Swittel said. Inexperience a concern for East Brookfield East Coach: Tom Swittel, fifth season, 31-12 record 2013: 5-5 overall, 4-3 GMC Key returning players: senior P/K Connor Allen, senior LB Micah Childs Outlook: "Our talent level is not such that we can just show up and win games but we'll be competitive and I've always said that if you can be competitive, you can win games," Swittel said. Coach Swittel's conference favorites: Hamilton, Marquette, Menomonee Falls PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Brookfield East PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Brookfield Central PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Brookfield Academy By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD — At first glance, it would appear as if Jon Kahle has a daunting task ahead of him. The third-year Brookfield Academy coach has only two seniors on his team and lost star receiver Josiah Marsh (1,001 yards and 10 touchdowns) to graduation. But Kahle is undaunted, largely due to the return of eight starters on both offense and defense. That includes senior Spencer Francis (5-foot-10, 180 pounds), who passed for 1,678 yards and 19 touchdowns with just four interceptions while rushing for another 1,041 yards and 13 touch- downs. "We were very competitive at the end of last year. Things started to click for the sophomores who are now juniors," Kahle said. "We had freshmen and sophomores playing last year, but the experience they gained was incredible and we're hoping that pays dividends this year." The offense will have Francis at quarterback, juniors Colin Guest (5- foot-11 inches, 190 pounds) and Aaron Goecks (5-10, 210) in the backfield, junior Jack Halquist (6-1, 215) at cen- ter and a line that includes junior let- termen starters Daniel Cevilla (5-8, 190) and Thomas Lawinger (6-3, 180) and newcomers juniors Andre Sham- mo (5-10, 190) and Tizoc Zarate (5-7, 245) and sophomores JP Elfelt (6-1, 170) and Alex Gross (5-10, 270). The top wideouts are senior Pat Novacek (5-11, 210) and sophomore Ryan Kolasinski (5-8, 150). Novacek caught 28 passes for 462 yards and six touchdowns last season. The defense will include Halquist on the line, Lawinger and sophomore Ian Francis (5-11, 190) at end, Guest, Novacek and Goecks at linebacker and Francis, juniors Robbie Barth (5- 7, 175) and Mark Morris (5-8, 145) and Kolasinski in the secondary. Knights bring back experience Brookfield Academy Coach: Jon Kahle, third season 2013: 4-5 overall, 3-4 in Midwest Classic Key returning players: senior QB Spencer Francis, junior LB Colin Guest, senior WR/LB Pat Novacek Coach Kahle's conference favorites: Lake Country Lutheran, St. Francis and Uni- versity School of Milwaukee Swittel
