What is Plastic Surgery? T he word plastic comes from the Greek plastikos, meaning “able to be shaped or molded”. The earliest known report on reconstruction involved reconstruction of noses from adjacent cheek tissues. Surgeons continued to work on techniques as diseases such as syphilis ran rampant through Europe designing flaps from adjacent areas to reconstruct noses. Innovative techniques continued to be developed and refined until World War I when gunshot wounds to the face produced new challenges and problems. Modern cosmetic plastic surgery evolved from the reconstructive procedures used to treat our soldiers. Over the years many other doctors have claimed to be plastic surgeons and the media often confuses this in their articles. Plastic surgeons complete a residency in a surgical specialty then complete an additional 2-3 years of plastic surgery. Board certification is their next hurdle where their work is evaluated by the board and both a written and oral exam have to be passed before one can say they are “board certified”. Other physicians claim “plastic surgery” status but their training is limited to certain parts of the body such as ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists (ENT). There is also the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery where anyone can complete a course and claim to be board certified. Check your doctor’s credentials carefully. Plastic surgery today runs the gamut from non-invasive procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers to laser resurfacing, reconstructive procedures such as cleft lip and palate or pressure sore repair, hand surgery, and cosmetic procedures involving the entire body from head to toe. A plastic surgeon treats the entire person, focused on maintaining harmony throughout the body.
