The conference rewarded the Lasers with senior guard Paul Miller being voted Player of the Year and Brad Bestor Coach of the Year in all-conference voting. Joining Miller on the first team was senior teammate Mitchell Oleson. Other first-team selections were Arrowhead senior Billy Hirschfeld and sophomore Bryce Nze, Mukwonago senior Aaron Nixon, Waukesha North senior Mark Becker and Waukesha West senior Earnest Cowser. – Freeman Staff PREP PROFILE KM's Miller grows into a star By Pat Neumuth Freeman Staff WALES – When Paul Miller walked through the doors of Kettle Moraine High School, he was your typical freshman, standing 5-foot-11 and weigh- ing about 140 pounds. He played basketball on the Lasers' freshman team, while fellow classmate Mitchell Oleson was already on varsity. "Back then, those guys worked harder than I did," Miller said. "I tried learning on what Mitch was doing." After that freshman year, he knew if he wanted to be the player he thought he could be that he needed to work harder and play more. He also needed to grow. Both happened, and now a senior, he helped Kettle Moraine to its first Classic 8 Conference championship this season and will attend North Dakota State Univer- sity on a basketball scholar- ship next year. The summer following his freshman year was the first time he played AAU basket- ball, joining the Wisconsin Shooters. Miller said his game quickly elevated, and it also helped that he grew a little and hit the weights more seriously. However, Miller barely made the Shooters. He was the 11th man to start the sea- son. Most of his teammates had played higher than the freshman level, but by the time his first season ended Miller was in the starting lineup. That only motivated him to play more. Kettle Moraine coach Brad Bestor said Miller's entire career epitomizes that sum- mer. "He came up his sophomore year and played, but he didn't score a ton – maybe six points per game," Bestor said. "Then he averaged 18 points the sec- ond half of his sophomore year, which got him to around 12 points per game. "Every six months of his career, he's matured more physically and mentally. It's really been a fun thing watching that progress." Miller has become both physically and mentally gifted. At 6-foot-4, Miller can play point guard, shooting guard or small forward at the colle- giate level. He said the NDSU coaches will start him on the wing and groom him into the point guard position. Summit League champion NDSU, an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament, has a starting point guard in Lawrence Alexander who will be a senior next year and, if all goes to plan, Miller will take over once he graduates. There's still a possibly Miller could redshirt next winter. Bestor said the Lasers would have had five or six losses had Miller not known how to share the ball. But the intellect translates off the floor even more. He was recruited by Ivy League schools thanks to his 3.9 grade-point average. Howev- er, the Ivy League doesn't give out athletic scholar- ships, something Miller wanted. Miller is looking to study accounting at NDSU. But maybe four years ago, Miller wasn't your typical freshman after all. He walked through those doors as one of the youngest 14- year olds. When Miller is handed his diploma at grad- uation, he will still be 17. "I've ripped on (my par- ents) a couple of times, but yeah it would be nice if I were a junior," Miller joked. Perlewitz led the Lakers to the division title while averaging 14.8 points per game. The Waukesha native was joined on the first team by teammates Grace Neider, a freshman, and Ellen Tyler, a senior. Sophomore Elizabeth Rahmlow and freshman Erika VanDerVoort received honorable mention. Sophomore Hunter Bolger was a second- team pick for the ULS boys, while Ian Doherty received honorable mention. All-state hockey honors given out WAUKESHA – Waukesha South High School senior Zed Dietrich was selected first-team all-state by the Wisconsin Hock- ey Coaches Association. It was the third all-state honor for Diet- rich, this season's Classic 8 Conference Player of the Year.
