sin Jobs Now, a nonprofit organization committed to fighting income inequity and building stronger communities throughout Wisconsin. "This bus, brought together by Americans United For Change, has really gone across the country talking to work- ers and talking to elected officials, and building a consensus that raising the min- imum wage is the right thing to do for the country," she said. The nearly $3 raise could provide hard- working Americans with extra money to spend, leaving families feeling more financially stable, according to Americans United for Change. Currently, living wage in Milwaukee is considered to be $19,717 to afford housing, medical care, transportation and food. If full-time Wisconsin workers made $10.10 an hour, they'd ear n $21,008 a year. According to a recent report by the Center on Wisconsin Strategy, increasing the minimum wage to $10.10 by July 2016 would increase wages for over half a mil- lion Wisconsin workers, boost economic activity in the state by an estimated $517 million and generate 3,800 jobs. The Americans United for Change bus tour is aimed toward Republicans. The organization wants to persuade the GOP to vote to raise the wage to $10.10 over the course of three years, said Lauren Weiner, a spokesperson for the organiza- tion. In Wisconsin, the organization is tar- geting Republican state Sen. Ron Johnson and Rep. Paul Ryan. "The Senate is getting ready to vote on raising the minimum wage, either this week or in the coming weeks, to $10.10," Weiner said. "We anticipate that Senator Johnson could vote for it and Congressman Ryan obviously is an influ- ential vote in the House." Others affected by minimum wage also spoke at Monday's event. Kevin Walker, an Orion security guard and a father who works the third shift as a county-contracted guard, has a second job in order to get by. "I was one of the workers affected by the living wage," Walker said. "I only made $8.50 an hour and thanks to those who were willing to stick their necks out, a bill was passed that we could start mak- ing a decent wage. Today it's not about me. It's about people who are making min- imum wage. We know $10.10 is not enough, but it's at least a start." An increase in the minimum wage would do more than just help individuals, said Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United for Change. It has the power to improve the economy. "Raising the minimum wage would provide a needed boost, not just for the millions of struggling low-wage American workers that can barely survive on $7.25, but for the U.S. economy as a whole. It will create jobs because it puts more money in the pockets of workers who will quickly inject it back into the economy," he said. More money means more will be spent on goods and services, which will result in businesses hiring more workers to meet that demand, Woodhouse said. Hardworking Milwaukeans shouldn't be struggling to get by, Woodhouse said. "Decades' worth of research done after previous minimum wage increases shows nothing but net economic benefits as a result, which is why so many successful business leaders and over 600 economists, including seven Nobel Laureates, are call- ing on Congress to raise it again now," he said.
