Post Staff MILWAUKEE – County voters Tuesday approved a referendum on cutting Milwaukee County supervisors' pay in half and eliminating their future health and pension benefits. It won handily with 71 percent (47,657 votes) for the referendum and 29 percent (19,642) against it. "I'm happy the voters of Milwaukee County had their voice heard on this important issue and I look forward to con- tinuing to work with the Board," Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said in a statement. Tuesday's binding vote won't go into effect for two years and after the 2016 coun- ty supervisor elections. Supervisors' pay would drop from $50,679 to $24,051. The County Board chairman's pay would drop from more than $71,000 a year to about $36,000. Supervisors would lose their county health insurance and pension benefits. Despite the impending changes, county supervisors will remain the highest-paid in the state. Taxpayers will save almost $500,000 once the lower compensation is enforced. The state ordered the binding referen- dum after passing law in 2013 to reduce the powers and budget of the board. "The results of (Tuesday) night's refer- endum were not surprising," County Board Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic said. "The outcome was predetermined when, almost one year ago, state Republicans introduced legislation to dilute the people's representation. As wealthy special inter- ests subsequently raised money to cam- paign for the misleading referendum, weakening local representation was the goal." In other election night results: ■ Russell Stamper II and Eyon Biddle Sr. were the leading voter-getters in District 15 to replace Willie Hines Jr., who resigned to join the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. ■ The county's only contested judicial race saw Court Commissioner Laura Gramling Perez defeat fellow Commissioner Cedric Cornwall. She will succeed Circuit Judge Michale Guolee, who plans to retire this summer. With 100 per- cent reporting, Gramling Pérez collected 35,960 votes (60 percent) to Cronwall's 24,011 votes (40 percent). ■ In South Milwaukee, Alderman Erik Brooks easily defeated incumbent Thomas Zepecki and will be the city's next mayor. With 100 percent reporting, Brooks fin- ished with 2,021 votes (62 percent) to Zepecki's 1,248 (38 percent). Brooks will serve a three-year term while Zepecki ends his run as a four-term mayor. ■ In Franklin, Alderman Steve Olson scored a sizable victory over Common Council President Steve F. Taylor to claim the mayor's seat, according to the unofficial results, and captured a three-year term. Olson amassed 62 percent of the vote (2,975) to Taylor's 38 percent (1,849). Current Mayor Tom Taylor opted not to seek re-elec- tion this spring. ■ In West Milwaukee, incumbent Ronald Hayward defeated Kurt Ritzka 53 percent to 47 percent. ■ In Whitefish Bay, incumbent Julie Siegel defeated challenger Anne O'Connor in the race for village president 51 percent to 49 percent. ■ Additionally, Dennis Griffin and Gary Williams retained seats on the Brown Deer School Board; James Awe and Terry Boschert earned seats as Brown Deer trustees; Scott Mulqueen and Crystal Silkwood earned Cudahy School Board seats; Kristen Wilhelm, Janet Evans and Susanne Mayer won aldermanic seats in Franklin; Linda Witkowski and Tim Nelson won Franklin School Board seats; Victoria McCormick won a Greendale School Board seat; and Donna Ouellette and James Birmingham won Greendale trustee seats. In Greenfield, Linda Joy Lubotsky and Bruce Bailey won aldermanic races, and Tom Frohna and Pam Sierzchulski cap- tured seats on the city's school board. In St. Francis, Michael McSweeney and Ray Klug won aldermanic races; in Wauwatosa, Matt Stippich, Michael Walsh and Jason Kofroth won aldermanic races, and Brian Bawden won a school board seat. In West Allis-West Milwaukee, Dan Bailey, Gail Radonski and Diane Narlock won seats on the school board; Kevin Haass won an aldermanic race by seven votes in West Allis; Whitefish Bay elected William Dernet and Tara Serebin as trustees; and Nancy Zaborowski, Jon Jones and Jonathon Cagle garnered Whitnall School Board seats. Results are unofficial until canvassed. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • April 4, 2014 volume 20, issue number 14 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414.744.6370 news display and advertising FAX: 414.744.6884 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: Daryl Skaradzinski: General Manager - ext. 13 dskaradzinski@conleynet.com For editiorial inquires: Dwayne Butler: Editor - 262-513-2626 dbutler@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
