10 • Milwaukee Post • March 14, 2014 Question of the week Should Milwaukee County and the city of Milwaukee use House of Correction inmates who are sentenced to community service to fill potholes on area streets? "Sure, why not. I'm sure some of them would like to get out on a voluntary basis, and if this can be approved through organizations like the ACLU and other bleeding heart organizations that would be a blessing for the community." – J.R. Zmuda Milwaukee "Yes, it is an idea worth trying. It affords inmates the opportunity to give back to the community (restorative justice), plus an opportunity to gain work experience that may lead to post-release employment. There is already a precedent for inmate work in our community. Each night during Summerfest, inmate crews are brought down to clean the ground for the following day. They are rewarded with days reduced from their sentences. Obviously, care needs to be taken in choosing workers. One could start with current Huber inmates who have no job to go to. If the program works, it could be expanded to include cleanup in our parks. It seems like a win-win situation for both inmates and tax- payers – not to mention our cars." – Sandy Sue Szandrek Milwaukee Culver's CEO Craig Culver has proposed a two-tier minimum wage system – one for teenage workers and one for adults.Would you prefer this system or the proposed straight minimum wage of $10.10 per hour?
