The San Rafael Airport itself, where Herbst maintains his office, has become something of a magnet for green living in recent years, as Herbst attracts tenants with a green sensibility similar to his own. The Agriculture Institute of Marin – which runs more than a dozen farmers' markets – cur- rently rents office space at the airport. "There's a high level of consciousness about conservation," Herbst explains. "We're sort of creating an ethos out here." They're also creating a steady stream of wholesome foods for family members and employees in the airport's organic garden tended by Hassan Shekou, his wife's un- cle. "And we have our own chickens, so we have our own eggs," Herbst adds. Next up at the airport is the construc- tion of LEED Gold certified sports facility complete with solar power, solar hot wa- ter and gray water recycling. Construction begins this June, when the clapper rail breeding season near an adjacent creek winds down. When completed in late 2015, the complex will include outdoor as well as indoor soccer fields for year-round tournament play and a family recreation area complete with a climbing wall and ropes, trampolines, laser tag and more. "There'll be a lot of birthday parties," Herbst laughs. The complex—in the works since 2005 – is being constructed in partnership with Marin native Andrew Rowley, whose So- noma County company, Sports City, will run the complex after completion. "He'd been looking for a place in Marin to build a facility," Herbst says. "I was unaware of the shortage of soccer fields in Marin." Of course, that lack of awareness was probably due to the fact that in 2005 Herbst and Shekou's two children, Grace and Ryan, hadn't yet begun playing sports themselves. Today Grace, 13, competes in volley- ball, basketball and track. Ryan, 9, enjoys baseball, soccer, basketball, golf and tennis. Herbst himself is a United States Tennis Association rated 4.5 tennis player who also happens to carry a 3.5 golf handicap.
