SPRING 2014 • FLOURISH 15 the court or golf course, he coaches his childrens' volleyball and baseball teams, while also helping out with basketball. Since attending the London Olympics with her dad, Grace has expressed an interest in pole vaulting, and Herbst, the former Crimson pole vaulter, smiles when he says, "My daughter's hoping to follow in my footsteps." Herbst and his kids are also very involved in the Ross chapter of Indian Guides and Indian Princesses. "We moved to Ross three years ago," he says, "and this is how you make friends. It's daddy-daughter and daddy-son time with the kids. The moms aren't involved at all. Each grade (at Ross School) has its own tribe, and you become best friends with the dads of kids in your kids' grades." Activities include camp-outs, hikes, star-gazing on Mount Baldy and kayaking on Corte Madera Creek, just the sort of outdoor activities Herbst himself enjoyed as a youngster in far northern Wisconsin. Herbst's interest in preserving the en- vironment even extends to his choice of vehicle. He commutes to work and trans- ports his family around Marin in an all- electric Toyota RAV4-EV, the only electric SUV on the market today. Looking ahead to the future, Herbst is hoping to witness a steady growth in solar energy in Marin County as the state works to meet its goal of procuring 33% of its energy from renewable resources by 2020. Five years from now, he "would like to see numerous projects like mine on other rooftops." Parking structure and carport rooftops are a logical spot for panels, as are office building rooftops, because "projects can't be rejected by neighbors for aesthetics." He'd also like to see the Marin County Board of Supervisors develop a solid policy for solar power on county agricul- tural land so that rural landowners can access the power of the sun, helping the county and state meet power goals. "We need a road map so there is certainty. New technologies are coming up every week. I just want to see more renewable energy here."
