SPRING 2014 • FLOURISH 11
From the Editor
Even as we look
forward to spring,
I'm still celebrating
the rain. It's here
late this year and
probably too little
as well. Neverthe-
less, any rain is a
welcome sight.
The lack of rain almost put a kink in our
feature story too. We sent Karen Pavone
on a mushroom hunt with sfForage. At the
time, there had been very little rain – which
means very few mushrooms. What kind
of mushroom hunt would it be without
mushrooms? Well, it could have been a very
desperate hike through the woods, but
luckily Karen and her group hit pay dirt. Be
sure to read about her adventure on page
21 of this issue.
In keeping with spring traditions we also
take a look at spring cleaning – green style.
Beth Greer is a master at detoxing your
cleaning routine and shares her simple tips
to make it safer.
And in anticipation of the sun, we inter-
view Bob Herbst – the owner of Marin's
largest solar installation. Read about where
his passion comes from and how it's driving
his future plans for the property.
Speaking of passion, Chef Christian Cai-
azzo of Osteria Stellina talks about his rustic,
farm-to-table approach for his restaurant
and business ventures. He then shares four
recipes to build a complete meal of Braised
Barinaga.
Also in this issue we share tips on tea
from two North Bay tea purveyors, we talk
to a few Sonoma County artists who are
exploring the medium of "junk" and finally,
we take a trip to the Barlow. The Barlow is
Sebastopol's sustainable business commu-
nity. Or is it a hub? A haven? Let's just call it
"foodie paradise." You can get a rundown
of the whole 12-acre complex on page 49.
We hope you'll enjoy these stories as you
huddle inside during a very rainy spring.
Cheers,
Dianne Provenzano
