Today's top makers take this concept to new heights of luxury, offering exquisite diamond timepieces that are feminine works of art. Creating haute diamond horological masterpieces is no easy task. It takes time to collect all the proper cuts, colors, and clarities to work together in a timepiece. In many cases, the diamond cuts used for watches are different from those used for jewelry, and the same is true of the settings. In fact, there are myriad diamond settings used exclusively in watchmaking to create flowing ribbons, scintillating flowers, and shimmering diamond-pavé dials. Often these watches command hundreds of hours of patient work by master gem setters, who fine-tune the settings and perfectly place every diamond by hand. That sensational handiwork is what makes these watches so personal and unique. "The Farandole timepiece is a stunning example of the maison's ability to combine both glamour and functionality," says Sheryl Dyer, boutique director of Van Cleef & Arpels Chicago.
