TASTE Foodie Frenzy TWO NEW RESTAURANTS ARE HELMED BY BOSTON'S HOTTEST CHEFS. BY JESSICA LANIEWSKI A Culinary Renaissance Chefs Mark Gaier and Clark Frasier, the culinary geniuses behind Arrows in Ogunquit, Maine, are opening a new restaurant called M.C. Spiedo at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel in the Seaport District. The menu is inspired by the pair's time in Italy, specifically Florence, Bologna, and Venice, and will feature dishes such as roasted pears with Arrows' house-cured prosciutto and their signature Leonardo's Salad, which is based on a grocery-shopping list Leonardo da Vinci jotted down in one of his notebooks. 606 Congress St.; markandclarkrestaurants.com Home on the Range Chef Michael Scelfo (previously of Russell House Tavern) strikes out on his own with Alden & Harlow, located in the former Casablanca spot. Scelfo's vision is to replicate his relaxed style of cooking at home. Dishes include grilled cauliflower and sesame caponata, and smoked Moosabec mussels with grilled squash. Scelfo will still feature plenty of the meat he's famous for, but he is also embracing the bounty of New England's harvest by presenting vegetables in a hearty manner (think creamed corn and vinegar-glazed carrots). 40 Brattle St., Cambridge; aldenandharlow.com Three's Company THE AFTERNOON TEAM AT MIX 104.1 DIVULGE THEIR FAVORITE PLACES TO DRINK AND EAT DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. G regg Daniels, Fast Freddy, and Sue Brady are said to be the hardest-working threesome on afternoon radio. Not only is their daily show Boston's most entertaining five hours, they spend a chunk of their December giving back to organizations that support the community, like Boston Children's Hospital, Red Sox Foundation, and The Greater Boston Food Bank. They let us in on their favorite places to eat and share a cocktail when they're off the air over the holidays. I like to enjoy a fireside cocktail in the lounge before adjourning to the dining room. My menu favorites include the New England clam chowder, New York sirloin, and signature Boston Cream Pie." 60 School St., 617-2278600; omnihotels.com "I adore La Hacienda, opened in 1939 by John DiCecca. The menu includes lasagna, veal marsala, chicken piccata, and my favorite, the cheesy eggplant parmigiana. I look forward to capping off the evening with a scrumptious slice of cheesecake that my friend Louie gets at Christmas just for me." 46 Medford St., Somerville, 617-8642553; lahacienda somerville.com "Our go-to dinner at Alma Nove starts with the pork meatball appetizer, followed by gnocchi with wild mushrooms. There's something tranquil about waterfront dining during a New England winter. The lighting, outside fireplace, and wood-burning oven scent allow me to slow down and enjoy my favorite things about this time of year: family, food, and a glass of Sam Adams." 22 Shipyard Dr., Hingham, 781-749-3353; almanovehingham.com BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM 092_BC_ST_DineAround/News_Holiday_13.indd 92 11/4/13 10:16 AM
