NON TRANS FAT By Catherine Jozwik Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — Every month, Emerald City Catering owners Steve and Laurie Ozbolt fill bellies while assisting Milwaukee's neediest residents. Pay As You May brunches are held 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the first Sunday of every month at the Emerald City facility, 3555 S. 13th St. Meals include standard breakfast fare like eggs, bacon, sausage and hash browns, and fried chicken, roast beef, pulled pork and macaroni and cheese. "If you want to pay $1, pay $10, pay $100, or just pay a compliment, that's fantastic," said Steve Ozbolt. All proceeds are donated to the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee. Emerald City was founded nearly a decade ago. Originally, the Ozbolts rented the Blessed Sacrament Church kitchen on 40th Street and Oklahoma Avenue, in Steve Ozbolt's childhood neighborhood. The business, the majority of which consists of memorial lunches and weddings, is open every Friday for an all-you-can-eat fish fry. The meal program began around two years ago, when Emerald City was located on 17th and Rawson Avenues in South Milwaukee. The Ozbolts belonged to the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, and were made aware of social services organ- ization South Milwaukee Human Concerns. Steve Ozbolt learned that nearly 900 area families visit food banks regularly. He decided to give back to the community that had been supportive of his and his wife's business and start Miracle Meal. "I told my wife, 'This is what I'd like to do to help the community,'" he said. She handed out over 100 cards good for a free meal to South Milwaukee residents. To give families discretion, takeout orders could be phoned in and picked up at the Rawson Avenue facility. Over time, the demand for meals increased, and the Emerald City owners implemented the donation-based Pay As You May program. Last May, the couple moved from their 1,000-square-foot South Milwaukee facility to their 8,000-square-foot location on 13th Street. Steve Ozbolt said the business typically serves 120 people each brunch, with about $600 raised for the Hunger Task Force. He said he and Laurie have received lots of positive feedback from area residents. The Ozbolts encourage people to partake in the next Pay As You May brunch Sunday. "Tell all of your friends. You are helping the community and enjoying a good meal," he added.
