recently, I shared an afternoon coffee with
theburg's food writer, rosemary baer.
If theburg were a more traditional company,
rosemary would be employee no. 1, with us
since the very first issue nearly a decade ago.
she's hung with us during our ups and downs
and ups again, building a following locally,
especially among readers who appreciate a
dose of nostalgia and family whimsy along with
their pasta fagioli and chicken piccata—always
accompanied, of course, by a nice glass of wine
or a cocktail. (note to John baer: eat your peas
already!)
coffee with rosemary caused me to think
about the many people who have helped us
along our journey. over the years, theburg
has had hundreds of contributors—reporters,
writers, artists, illustrators, photographers,
designers, interns, etc., all local. we've also had
the support of so many generous community
partners—advertisers, sponsors, businesses,
organizations and so on.
theburg is a community project. In my view,
that's why we've been able to sustain ourselves
during otherwise dire times in the news business.
when people ask me how we manage to survive,
that's what I tell them. sure, we work hard and
try our best to put out a great product. but we're
here solely because of the support of the greater
harrisburg community—so, thank you!
As always, you'll discover dozens of
community voices throughout this issue—
people endeavoring to make their lives, and
ours, a little better. Along the way, you might
even hear a few meows and woofs.
that's right—it's our annual pet-themed issue,
which you may have already realized based on
all the cats on the cover. After years of featuring
happy cover dogs, we decided that we needed
to give equal time to the midstate's felines. but
just flip the issue open, and you dog people will
find something to like, as well.
otherwise, we have a little bit of this, a little bit
of that: news and features, dining and culture,
business and opinion. It's another month in the
life of theburg!

thank you to all of our area's cat-owners
for submitting photos of your beloved pets.
unfortunately, we couldn't fit all the submissions
on our cover. but we are grateful and humbled
by your overwhelming response.
